Download or read book The Lost Journalism of Ring Lardner written by Ring Lardner and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring Lardner’s influence on American letters is arguably greater than that of any other American writer in the early part of the twentieth century. Lauded by critics and the public for his groundbreaking short stories, Lardner was also the country’s best-known journalist in the 1920s and early 1930s, when his voice was all but inescapable in American newspapers and magazines. Lardner’s trenchant, observant, sly, and cynical writing style, along with a deep understanding of human foibles, made his articles wonderfully readable and his words resonate to this day. Ron Rapoport has gathered the best of Lardner’s journalism from his earliest days at the South Bend Times through his years at the Chicago Tribune and his weekly column for the Bell Syndicate, which appeared in 150 newspapers and reached eight million readers. In these columns Lardner not only covered the great sporting events of the era—from Jack Dempsey’s fights to the World Series and even an America’s Cup—he also wrote about politics, war, and Prohibition, as well as parodies, poems, and penetrating observations on American life. The Lost Journalism of Ring Lardner reintroduces this journalistic giant and his work and shows Lardner to be the rarest of writers: a spot-on chronicler of his time and place who remains contemporary to subsequent generations.

Book excerpt: The title of this book, also the title of my poem I Swim in Seas of Thirty-Two Legions, reflects all I ve felt I swam. For every strange, forbidden thought that one would not dare to speak out loud read mine and find comfort in that we all carry a full moon. At times I choose to bear it all and at times I flirt with words riddles. You question yourself, your partners, your children, your vocations, and humanity. Without these questions one would never grow, one would never see all their purpose. So I invite you to dance, swim, fly, and even sink with me in open oceans, dark skies, and on earthbound sands. Angel... Even if you Break My Heart... you'll always be my angel... because you gave my poems wings... Wings to Fly!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’ve given my life to the club. And now, I might be the reason an empire falls. Finn “Shamrock” Adair A year of my life—stolen. The number of once-in-a-lifetime moments the Cartel took from me is immeasurable. I missed the birth of my children, their first milestones, their first words. I wasn’t here when two of my brothers claimed ol’ ladies. I missed most of my sister-in-law’s pregnancy and wasn’t there to help my sister through her miscarriage. Most of all, I wasn’t here to lay my mother to rest. Missing all those things, getting my life back, being the man they needed for a year, but I couldn’t be, is all that should matter to me. That should be my only focus now that I’m home and with my club again. But the Cartel destroyed that man that once ran this club. Used as a guinea pig to test their newest drugs, the only thing I want to do, the only thing I can seem to focus on, is getting high again. A year in a constant state of being out of my mind has left me as little more than a junkie. I want to do the right thing, but I can’t. The demons unleashed in me are too strong, have too great a hold now. My club isn’t going to give up, though, and for once, their greatest adversary isn’t an outside force—it’s me. I held this club together for so long, waited a lifetime to get my woman back, and now? I just might be the very reason it all crumbles to the ground.

Download or read book The Shamrock and the Cross written by Eileen P. Sullivan and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Shamrock and the Cross: Irish American Novelists Shape American Catholicism, Eileen P. Sullivan traces changes in nineteenth-century American Catholic culture through a study of Catholic popular literature. Analyzing more than thirty novels spanning the period from the 1830s to the 1870s, Sullivan elucidates the ways in which Irish immigration, which transformed the American Catholic population and its institutions, also changed what it meant to be a Catholic in America. In the 1830s and 1840s, most Catholic fiction was written by American-born converts from Protestant denominations; after 1850, most was written by Irish immigrants or their children, who created characters and plots that mirrored immigrants’ lives. The post-1850 novelists portrayed Catholics as a community of people bound together by shared ethnicity, ritual, and loyalty to their priests rather than by shared theological or moral beliefs. Their novels focused on poor and working-class characters; the reasons they left their homeland; how they fared in the American job market; and where they stood on issues such as slavery, abolition, and women’s rights. In developing their plots, these later novelists took positions on capitalism and on race and gender, providing the first alternative to the reigning domestic ideal of women. Far more conscious of American anti-Catholicism than the earlier Catholic novelists, they stressed the dangers of assimilation and the importance of separate institutions supporting a separate culture. Given the influence of the Irish in church institutions, the type of Catholicism they favored became the gold standard for all American Catholics, shaping their consciousness until well into the next century.
