Book The Lost Lives of the Clipper Malay

Download or read book The Lost Lives of the Clipper Malay written by Lizzie Lee and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: December 12, 1968: Boeing 707, Pan American Clipper Malay - Flight 217 - New York to Caracas, was supposed to be an uneventful and ordinary four-hour flight. Some were traveling for the holidays. Some were going home after a business trip. Some were returning from a family funeral. Some were doing their job. All shared the same final destiny. Three minutes before landing, the airplane disappeared from the control tower radar screen. The aircraft crashed into the ocean resulting in the tragic death of all passengers and crew. The recovery process was gruesome and long. The upcoming festive holiday season turned bleak.Fifty years later, in 2018, a different tragedy became the underpinning force that brought to light the stories of the Clipper Malay: the death of Diego Moreno, killed in the line of duty, in Washington State. This misfortune helped to develop, piece, by piece, the whole story: a commercial flight, an airplane sunk at the bottom of the sea, fifty-one lives lost, the pain after the loss, what is to lose more than one member of the family, coping with memorials to honor the victims, and, knowing that fate, cannot be changed. The death of a beautiful human being helped consolidate the lives of fifty-one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Russel Wallace's 'The Malay Archipelago' is a two-volume travelogue that provides a detailed account of his explorations in the Southeast Asian region. Written in a captivating narrative style, Wallace describes the flora, fauna, and indigenous peoples of the Malay Archipelago, offering valuable insights into the biodiversity of the region. His vivid descriptions and meticulous observations make this work a significant contribution to both travel literature and natural history studies. Wallace's inclusion of his theory of evolution and biogeography adds an extra layer of depth to the text, positioning it within the context of the scientific debates of the time. Alfred Russel Wallace, a renowned naturalist and contemporary of Charles Darwin, was inspired to write 'The Malay Archipelago' based on his extensive travels in the region. As a pioneer in the field of evolutionary biology, Wallace's work laid the groundwork for modern ecological studies and conservation efforts. I highly recommend 'The Malay Archipelago' to readers interested in travel literature, natural history, and evolutionary biology. Wallace's engaging prose and profound observations make this work a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the rich biodiversity of the Southeast Asian region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a new and comprehensive account of the fastest and most beautiful sailing ships ever built. It explores the quest for speed on the seas from the early 1800s through the fast-paced times of the 1850s spurred on by the California Gold Rush of 1849. Not only are the career details of such noted ships as the Flying Cloud and Challenge discussed in detail, but they are also put in context with the times in which they operated. Their builders in East Coast states from Maine to Florida are discussed in detail, as are the men, and a woman in one instance, who commanded and manned these ships. The book documents the roles that owners and shipping agents played, what kinds of cargo the ships carried worldwide and the unusual trades in which they participated.
