Specifically addressing the racialization of sexuality, the book asks how the politics of sexuality can be more explicitly and systematically theorized, along with state-sanctioned homophobia under Nazism, with a clear recognition that homophobia seldom operated alone, but worked in conjunction with other axes of power, including race, gender, eugenics, and population politics. In theorizing gender and sexuality as entangled axes of analysis, the book allows the specificity of lesbian difference to emerge and challenges the received wisdom that lesbians were not as systematically persecuted under National Socialism. William J. Spurlin questions the wisdom of received scholarship that reduces Nazi fascism to latent homosexuality, and examines the possible implications of Nazi homophobia, and its imbrication with other deployments of power, for the study of contemporary culture where the homophobic impulse continues to reverberate, thereby challenging understandings of history steeped in notions of progressive modernity.

But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Based on a rich prosopographical database of around 3500 biographies of people born in the 19th century, the book addresses the interplay of several generations of leftists, looking at the specifics of how ideas were generated, received, transferred and transformed. Finally, the work investigates the intersection between subjectivity and memory as reflected in a unique cache of archival materials containing over 4000 documentary sources including diaries, oral interviews, and unpublished memoirs. The movement, founded in the 1880s, was dominated by Russian-speaking intellectuals, including Abraham Cahan, Mikhail Zametkin, and Chaim Zhitlovsky. Socialist leaders quickly found Yiddish essential to convey their message to the Jewish immigrant community, and they developed a remarkable public culture through lectures and social events, workers' education societies, Yiddish schools, and a press that found its strongest voice in the mass-circulation newspaper Forverts. Arguing against the view that socialism and Yiddish culture arrived as Old World holdovers, Michels demonstrates that they arose in New York in response to local conditions and thrived not despite Americanization, but because of it.
