Book excerpt: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35 Have you ever wished you had a recipe for the Christian life you could whip up with results pleasing to God? You know, one of those step one step two now add to recipes? Well, there is! The Lord has, through the apostle Peter in his letters to the church, given to each person a step-by-step recipe; He even supplies the key ingredients. Jesus offers you the Bread of Life and the gift of faith to receive it. That gift of salvation and faith starts you off on the right track and keeps you there if you remember to stir it (2 Tim. 1:6). In He Calls Me Friend, I draw on the custom of offering friendship bread to new neighbors to explain the spiritual truths found in 2 Peter 1. Just as in the physical recipe of friendship bread, the startera key ingredient supplied by the potential friendis vital; you cannot go any further without it. The apostle Peter outlines three things Jesus gives to each new Christian: grace, faith, and precious promises. These make up the starter for the spiritual recipe. Peter encourages you the believer to add to this virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and last but not least, charity. These seven ingredients make up the rest of the recipe. New believers will benefit from this step-by-step outline of what being a true friend of Christ involves. The book will also encourage women of any age group who are established in the faith to grow spiritually stronger. Following the recipe with care, they will be able to not only serve the sweet bread of heaven in their own home but have enough to share with neighbors they meet along the way.

Book AN Optimist s Tour of the Future

Download or read book AN Optimist s Tour of the Future written by Mark Stevenson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, a smart and entertaining guide to the future of civilization When unexpectedly confronted with his own mortality, Mark Stevenson-a writer, deep-thinker, and stand-up comedian-began to ponder what the future holds for our species. "The past is a foreign country," writes Stevenson. "By my analysis it's a bit like France-in that I've been to parts of it and eaten some nice food there. But the future? The future is an unknown territory-and there isn't a guidebook." Thus, his ambition was born. Stevenson set out simply, asking, "What's next?" and then traveled the globe in pursuit of the answers. Along the way, he visited the Australian outback to visit the farmers who can save us from climate change, met a robot with mood swings, and talked to the Spaniard who's putting a hotel in space. While some might be overwhelmed, or even dismayed by the looming realities of genome sequencing, synthetic biology, a nuclear renaissance, and carbon scrubbing, Stevenson remains, well, optimistic. Drawing on his singular humor and storytelling to break down these sometimes complicated discoveries, An Optimist's Tour of the Future paints a wonderfully readable, and completely enthralling portrait of where we'll be when we grow up- and why it's not so scary. • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-06-06

Download or read book The Weight of Night written by Christine Carbo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On most days, the wilderness gave me peace. But not tonight. In a land sculpted by glaciers, the forest is on fire. Thick smoke chokes the mountain air and casts an apocalyptic glow over the imposing peaks and vistas of Montana’s Glacier National Park. When firefighters are called in to dig firebreaks near the small town bordering the park, a crew member is shocked to unearth a shallow grave containing human remains. Park Police Officer Monty Harris is summoned to the site to conduct an excavation. But with an incendiary monster threatening to consume the town, Monty seeks help from Gretchen Larson, the county’s lead crime scene investigator. While the two work frantically to determine the true identity of the victim, a teenager suddenly disappears from one of the campgrounds in Glacier. Could the cases somehow be connected? As chances for recovery of the missing boy grow slimmer and the FBI finds only dead ends, Gretchen and Monty desperately race to fit all the pieces together while battling time, the elements, and their own unresolved inner conflicts. The Weight of Night is the latest novel in an award-winning series which “paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white” (Publishers Weekly). It is a gripping tribute to the power of redemption set against one of America’s most majestic and unforgiving landscapes.
