Book Florida s Lost Galleon

Download or read book Florida s Lost Galleon written by Roger C. Smith and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, North American Society for Oceanic History John Lyman Book Award in the Naval and Maritime Science and Technology Category In 1559, Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna led a fleet of ships from Mexico to Pensacola Bay, Florida. His objective was to settle the Florida frontier for the Kingdom of Spain. But a hurricane struck soon after his arrival, destroying the small colony and sinking six of his ships. Few significant remains were uncovered for more than 400 years—until a ship was found underwater off Emanuel Point in modern-day Pensacola. Florida’s Lost Galleon documents this groundbreaking discovery, the earliest shipwreck found in Florida. Underwater archaeologists describe how they explored the ship’s hull and recorded it carefully in order to reconstruct the original vessel and its last mission. They take readers into the laboratory, where they explain how the waterlogged objects they uncovered were analyzed and prepared for public display. The story of the ill-fated colony unfolds as they discuss the surprisingly well-preserved Spanish colonial artifacts, including armor, ammunition, plant and animal remains, and wooden and metal tools. The excavation of the Emanuel Point shipwreck was driven by the enthusiasm and support of local volunteers, and this volume argues for the importance of such public archaeology projects. Florida's Lost Galleon invites readers to experience the exciting world of marine archaeology as it opens up a forgotten chapter in American history. Contributors: Elizabeth D. Benchley | John R. Book excerpt: On July 24, 1715 the largest Spanish treasure fleet ever assembled sailed from Havana harbor bound for Spain. Seven days later, at 4 AM on July 31st, a hurricane destroyed all eleven of the treasure galleons, driving them onto Florida's shore in the area now known as Florida's Treasure Coast. It is known to history as the Lost Platos Flota.Eight of the wrecked ships have been accounted for and most of their treasure salvaged over the years. Two more galleons were recently discovered off the coast of Amelia Island. The one ship never found was the Patache of the Squadron, the Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion. The hold of La Concepcion was loaded with 8,500 gold reales, 40,000 silver pesos, 10 chests of gold bars, 30 chests of silver bars as well as precious stones, emeralds and pearls from Manila. It was vast treasure that has remained a mystery of the sea for over four hundred years. Then an archaeological dig turns up the Captain's log from La Concepcion on an island off the Georgia coast and the hunt is on for the last great treasure of Los Platos Flota, the silver fleet of King Philip of Spain. When ex-Navy Seal and archaeologist Don Robeson and his beautiful companion, historian and author, Kathleen Caulder, are asked to join in the search for La Concepcion they have no idea what they are getting themselves into.Modern day pirates, salvage claim jumpers and military cloaking devices that conceal a modern day "ghost ship" lead them on an escalating race against time as the US Navy calls on its former Seal Commander, Don Robeson, to help retrieve the cloaking device and protect US National security. As a hurricane bears down on them, the ghost ship attacks and time is running out to salvage any of the treasure, Don will need all his Navy Seal training to save himself, the love of his life Kathleen, his crew and our National Security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the middle decade of the 16th century a new type of sailing vessel emerged, designed to carry the wealth of the Americas to Spain. This was the galleon, and over the next century these vessels would serve Spain well as treasure ships and warships, becoming a symbol of Spanish power and wealth during the period. The development and construction of the Spanish galleon are discussed in this book, and the ordnance and crewing needed to produce and maintain these stately vessels is covered. The author also examines the role of the galleon as a treasure ship, and describes how these ships were manned and fought in action.
