Book The Diario of Christopher Columbus s First Voyage to America 1492 1493

Download or read book The Diario of Christopher Columbus s First Voyage to America 1492 1493 written by Christopher Columbus and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Quincentennial Celebration of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America approaches, interest in the voyage, and in the questions surrounding it, continues to grow. This definitive edition of Columbus’s account of the voyage presents the most accurate printed version of his journal available to date. Unfortunately both Columbus’s original manuscript, presented to Ferdinand and Isabella along with other evidence of his discoveries, and a single complete copy have been lost for centuries. The primary surviving record of the voyage–part quotation, part summary of the complete copy–is a transcription made by Bartolomé de las Casas in the 1530s. This new edition of the Las Casas manuscript presents its entire contents–including notes, insertions, and canceled text–more accurately, completely, and graphically than any other Spanish text published so far. In addition, the new translation, which strives for readability and accuracy, appears on pages facing the Spanish, encouraging on-the- spot comparisons of the translation with the original. Study of the work is further facilitated by extensive notes, documenting differences between the editors’ transcription and translation and those of other transcribers and translators and summarizing current research and debates on unanswered current research and debates on unanswered questions concerning the voyage. In addition to being the only edition in which Spanish and English are presented side by side, this edition includes the only concordance ever prepared for the Diario. Awaited by scholars, this new edition will help reduce the guesswork that has long plagued the study of Columbus’s voyage. It may shed light on a number of issues related to Columbus’s navigational methods and the identity of his landing places, issues whose resolution depend, at least in part, on an accurate transcription of the Diario. Containing day-by-day accounts of the voyage and the first sighting of land, of the first encounters with the native populations and the first appraisals of his islands explored, and of a suspenseful return voyage to Spain, the Diario provides a fascinating and useful account to historians, geographers, anthropologists, sailors, students, and anyone else interested in the discovery–or in a very good sea story.

Book excerpt: After multiple rejections, how did Christopher Columbus persuade Queen Isabella to support his historic voyage? In his private journal, Columbus recounts that he possesses an ancient map showing the American continent, handed down to him from the Knights Templar, which revealed the destination of their fabled treasure fleet-a treasure that included the Holy Grail, found under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem after the First Crusade. Found along with the Holy Grail was the Gospel of Lazarus, which, due to its heretical revelations about the foundations of Christianity, was kept secret for centuries by the Templars. Revealing this knowledge would have exposed Columbus to the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. To protect himself, he wove a multi-layered web of deceptions, ultimately revealing the truth only to Queen Isabella.

Book Diary Christopher Columbus

Download or read book Diary Christopher Columbus written by Christopher Colombus and published by Clube de Autores. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In appoint this work naming Christopher Columbus as the hero of humanity, I do not mean to beatify or canonize him. He did not use fair methods at all, nor was he honest at all, nor did he act at all with a clear and crystalline conscience. This work is a compilation of the Diary of Christopher Columbus, the navigator, so I will not go on these pages to dwell on the heroism of Columbus, only the personal Diary of Columbus in the days before and after the discovery of America. Man s life is like this, we go on living, then the judgment of others will tell whether we were heroes or villains. For certain people and at a certain time some are heroes and these same characters can be seen as villains. I do not hide that I see Columbus as a hero, but in presenting Columbus s diary I give readers the opportunity to examine for yourselves Columbus s narratives about his days that made him famous worldwide and placed him on the list of fame in human history.

Book A People s History of the United States

Download or read book A People s History of the United States written by Howard Zinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2003-02-04 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully annotated and illustrated throughout with prints, paintings and maps, this is a direct translation of Christopher Columbus' personal journal of his incredible voyage into uncharted waters in 1492. Departing from Gran Canaria in September 1492 to his arrival in San Salvador in the Bahamas on October 12th took just six weeks. Columbus made a detailed exploration of modern day Cuba, Hispaniola, and the surrounding islands, and wrote daily and in great detail about the lands he discovered and their inhabitants, and their potential to his Spanish sponsors. This journal must rank as one of the most important documents in the history of geographical discovery. The original remains of this invaluable manuscript are now lost, but by researching into the old chronicles of Spain by Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish historian who had access to Columbus' writings, amongst others, the eminent Victorian geographer and writer Sir Clements Markham has produced a highly readable and plausible account of Columbus' journey into the unknown.

Book excerpt: For fans of The Lost City of Z, The River of Doubt, and Lost in Shangri-La—a real-life Indiana Jones story, set in the mysterious jungles of Honduras. "I began to daydream about the jungle...." On April 6, 1940, explorer and future World War II spy Theodore Morde (who would one day attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler), anxious about the perilous journey that lay ahead of him. Deep inside “the little Amazon,” the jungles of Honduras’s Mosquito Coast—one of the largest, wildest, and most impenetrable stretches of tropical land in the world—lies the fabled city of Ciudad Blanca: the White City. For centuries, it has lured explorers, including Spanish conquistador Herman Cortes. Some intrepid souls got lost within its dense canopy; some disappeared. Others never made it out alive. Then, in 1939, Theodore Morde claimed that he had located this El Dorado-like city. Yet before he revealed its location, Morde died under strange circumstances, giving credence to those who believe that the spirits of the Ciudad Blanca killed him. In Jungleland, Christopher S. Stewart seeks to retrace Morde's steps and answer the questions his death left hanging. Is this lost city real or only a tantalyzing myth? What secrets does the jungle hold? What continues to draw explorers into the unknown jungleland at such terrific risk? In this absorbing true-life thriller, journalist Christopher S. Stewart sets out to find answers—a white-knuckle adventure that combines Morde’s wild, enigmatic tale with Stewart’s own epic journey to find the truth about the White City.
