Book The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets

Download or read book The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets written by Dr. John Goldingay and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand the Prophets Like Never Before with Amazing Insights from One of Today's Foremost Old Testament Scholars For many Christians reading the Old Testament, trying to understand Israel's prophets is like listening to just one side of a phone conversation--you only get half the idea of it. You hear the answer, but how do you know what question the prophet is answering? In The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets, John Goldingay uncovers the questions behind the prophets' answers that make their meaning and relevance intelligible to us. Written as a series of imaginary letters to the twelve Minor Prophets, The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets asks the kinds of questions that Hosea, Micah, Zechariah, and others were answering. The letters make clear the issues these prophets of Israel were dealing with or deliver the news they were responding to in their Old Testament writings. For example, To Hosea: Why did you marry someone you knew might be unfaithful? To Joel: It looks as if a locust epidemic is on the way: what should we do? To Amos: What should we do about the war crimes of peoples around us? To Obadiah: The Edomites have occupied our land and pushed us out: what's up with that? To Jonah: When is God going to fulfill his undertaking to destroy Nineveh? To Micah: Will God always be angry with us as a people? To Nahum: When is God going to fulfill his undertaking to destroy Nineveh? To Habakkuk: When is God going to do something about injustice in Judah? To Zephaniah: What do you mean by "the day of the Lord"? To Haggai: When is God going to fulfill his promises about rebuilding the temple? To Zechariah: Should Jeshua be High Priest when he has been in an unclean land? To Malachi: Why does serving God seem pointless? These and other questions help readers peer behind the veil of Minor Prophets' utterances and unlock their significance for today's Christians. Each chapter: begins with a brief paragraph of background about the prophet recounts questions or reports that have been addressed to the prophet in the form of a letter sums up message of the prophet responding to that question offers a brief comment or explanation after each passage The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets offers an imaginative, fun, and engaging way for students, pastors, and all serious Bible readers get a better grip on what is happening in these often misunderstood biblical books and get more out of their Bible reading and study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When was the last time that you read any one of the Minor Prophets? If we were to describe any part of the Bible as being neglected or forgotten, I think quite a number of us would list the last twelve books of the Old Testament right at the top! The last 12 books of the Old Testament are called the "minor prophets". It is not because these prophets were any less important but because the books are so much smaller. Why should we study the minor prophets? Because most Christians never really study them. It is not completely their fault. Most preachers never really preach on them either. This study is an overview that is designed to remedy that very problem!

Book Minor Prophets II Understanding the Bible Commentary Series

Download or read book Minor Prophets II Understanding the Bible Commentary Series written by John Goldingay and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minor Prophets are those dozen Old Testament books that, in the time of Jesus, were usually written on one scroll since they were all fairly brief. The late Elizabeth Achtemeier prepared the New International Biblical Commentary on the first six: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah. This second volume deals with the final six books. John Goldingay writes on Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai; Pamela Scalise takes on the longest, Zechariah, and the last, Malachi. Like the authors of other volumes in the NIBC, Goldingay and Scalise utilize what is referred to as "believing criticism" when examining the biblical texts. Based on fidelity to critical analysis and sensitivity to the faith of both ancient and contemporary readers, this balanced approach enriches both the academy and the church. Following the series guidelines, the authors clearly explain the texts with additional notes regarding interpretation and "practical" reflection. For example, Goldingay issues a reminder that when the prophets spoke against the arrogance and sins of Assyria and Babylon, the Israelites needed to hear the word of God as a caution against their own pride and wickedness. He goes on to suggest that modern readers must remember, as well, that the same attitudes and actions that led to the downfall of these ancient Middle East empires can fall upon any and all who follow their example. The New International Biblical Commentary offers the best of contemporary scholarship in a format that both general readers and serious students can use with profit. Based on the widely used New International Version translation, the NIBC presents careful section-by-section exposition with key terms and phrases highlighted and all Hebrew transliterated. A separate section of notes at the close of each chapter provides additional textual, linguistic, cultural, and technical comments. Each commentary also includes a selected bibliography as well as Scripture and subject indexes.

Download or read book The Book of the Former Prophets written by Thomas W Mann and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Former Prophets of the Hebrew Bible includes the books of Joshua through 2 Kings; it is a narrative of ancient Israel's history of some seven hundred years from the 'conquest' of Canaan to the exile, when Israel lost the land. Thomas Mann adoptsa critical perspective and incorporates many distinct literary sources from different times into his work. The result is a compelling example of ancient historiography as well as an impressive artistic achievement. The book contains fascinating (andoften horrifying) stories of war, religious fanaticism, terror, and disaster, as well as stories of deep personal loyalty, friendship, and faith. Finally, in a deeply thoughtful and constructive way, The Former Prophets addresses perennial questionslike, amongst others, 'What is the relationship between divine sovereignty and human political institutions?' or 'In what sense are historical events the result of human acts and also of divine Providence?'

Book The Books of the Twelve Prophets

Download or read book The Books of the Twelve Prophets written by Heinz-Josef Fabry and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: This anthology contains the latest research into the Twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. This research is the product of numerous research groups operating internationally and each pursuing detailed questions about the Twelve, such as how (or whether) the prophetic books make sense as a coherent group of texts, the structure of the books, and which motifs appear across the different texts. This volume presents the results of leading researchers and experts who pursue critical questions regarding the intertextual connections between the Minor Prophets, the Major Prophets, and the books of wisdom literature found in the Old Testament. Finally, the theological themes, social criticisms, views on the proper way of life, expectations about the messiah, and theodicy are all questions that are considered in these articles, as well as the reception of these themes in later literature, such as the Qumran texts, the New Testament, and rabbinical literature. The important, and even controversial, nature of the research on these themes reveals a striking debate about the power of God in the books of the Minor Prophets.
