The Church of England, for the same reason, holds it essential that the Book of Common Prayer shall be used for worship in all its churches and missions, that their identity may appear, and how they derive their origin from England. In Presbyterian churches the Westminster Confession of Faith serves the same purpose. By nearly all churches it has even been recognized as important that the church bell and steeple should go where-ever the Christian Church goes, to be marks of its historical derivation and identity. All these things have their importance and are essential in their way. But this only shows how, for reasons founded in human customs everywhere, the very circumstantials and so-called accidents of the sacraments that Christ appointed have their importance, and thus are essential to the proper observance of these sacraments. Let us be zealous for the things that mark the denominational identity of churches; but let us be more zealous for the scrupulous preservation of those marks about the Lord's Supper that stamp it as derived from Christ and from the land of promise, where "he died for our sins, and rose again for our justification." Here is a matter where must be applied the saying of Christ: " These things ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." What we contend for is, that we have a ritual in the directory o/-l Cor. 11; for such is the issue of all that we have so far been representing and defending. What we contend for in regard to the Lord's Supper is a strict and scrupulous adherence to the letter of the ordinance as received from the Apostle in 1 Cor. 11. The result is imitation; and in effect we maintain that it is imitation of the Apostle's way of administering the ordinance that is...

Building on the work of scholars who have chronicled this history in the period spanning the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, Dorn extends the narrative into the twentieth century.
