Book excerpt: Young Walter Scot is hot on the heels of cattle raiders in the service of the dark Lord of Soulis when he encounters his kinsman Michael Scot - and his life is changed for ever. Even in the turbulent Borderlands of the thirteenth-century Scotland Michael had a fearsome reputation as a magician and master of forbidden arts, trafficking with the demons of middle air. Now he has returned from years of exile with the Pope's pardon and the favour of the Emperor, a peaceful man of God - and yet strange events still follow him. The mysterious fire that blasts the raiders. The fourth voice that laughs where only three men were seen. The luxury that suddenly appears to furnish his long-abandoned castle - the mystery about him only deepens. But still darker forces are at work behind the bloody rivalries of Border politics, black sorceries stirring within the sinister castle of Hermitage. When Walter's father is ambushed and killed, his betrothed flung into a dungeon and his lands and his very life threatened by the necromancer-baron Soulis, Michael appears to offer the aid he desperately needs. Aid that, as Walter soon discovers, is almost as frightening as his enemies' threats - as he is transported to another world, ensnaring, enchanting, seductive. There he finds a new life, new heroism and a new, all-consuming love. But there is a terrible price he must pay...

Download or read book Ghosts on the Roof written by Whittaker Chambers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whittaker Chambers is one of the most controversial figures in modern American history a former Communist spy who left the party, testified against Alger Hiss before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and wrote a classic autobiography, Witness. Dismissed by some as a crank, reviled by others as a traitor, Chambers still looms as a Dostoevskian figure over three decades after his death in 1961. A man of profound pessimism, rare vision, and remarkable literary talents, his continuing importance was attested to when Ronald Reagan posthumously awarded him the Medal of Freedom in 1984. Ghosts on the Roof, originally published in 1989, brings together more than fifty short stories, essays, articles, and reviews that originally appeared in Time, Life, National Review, Commonweal, The American Mercury, and the New Masses. Included are essays on Karl Marx, Reinhold Niebuhr, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, George Santayana, Dame Rebecca West, Ayn Rand, and Greta Garbo. These show Chambers at his best, as a peerless historian of ideas.
Download or read book The Person That Lives Within written by Bishop Larry Davis and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live our lives leery of what comes next in our lives. No doubt we have been taught that our lives are on a linear path, but like our innate drive to search for an entity greater than ourselves, we are given the desire to search out the main reason we are here. We are given the desire to search for the reason we exist and for who we are. We study our environment and other organisms. We can normally make some connections on their purpose. Think about our sun, which is a relatively small star. We know that the sun gives off several different types of light, but what is its purpose? Is it just to give off light so that green plants containing chlorophyll""responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy in the presence of water and carbon dioxide""produce glucose through the process called photosynthesis? Does my career indicate who I am? Of course not! We know that there are many different careers""authors, comedians, actors, doctors, lawyers, astronauts, singers, preachers, teachers, construction workers. We are destined to fulfill a certain purpose while here on earth. So what is your purpose? If by happenstance I can focus your attention on why you are here, then over half of the battle is already won. Then you must scribe to understand your purpose. Start by asking yourself, "Who am I? Why am I here? What is my destiny?" It is my desire to prepare methods for believers to use in preparation for their Christian life and relationship with Christ by providing guidelines for prayer and communion with God. "That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:22 "" 24).
