Book No Other Way To Tell It

Download or read book No Other Way To Tell It written by Derek Paget and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drama documentary is a program category unique to television. Combining the factual approach of documentary with the entertainment values of drama, dramadoc/docudrama has featured in television schedules for over forty years, and has often been the focus of controversy. Questions are frequently asked about how the viewer is to judge between fact and fiction, and whether such programs invade individuals’ privacy. No Other Way to Tell It is an introductory book which defines the form, and reviews its history and development on British and American television. The people who make the programs--television producers, writers, actors and lawyers--give their views, and recent co-production work between Granada TV in Britain and Home Box Office in America is examined. Hostages, a co-production which was bitterly opposed by the British and American hostages released from captivity in Beirut at the beginning of the decade, is used to illustrate the changes that are now taking place within the medium.

Book Culture Inc

    Book Details:
  • Author : Herbert I. Schiller
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 0195067835
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Culture Inc written by Herbert I. Schiller and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans take for granted that they live in an open society with a free market of ideas. But as Herbert Schiller reveals in Culture, Inc., the corporate arm has reached into every corner of daily life, and from the shopping mall to the art gallery, big-business influence has brought about some frightening changes in American culture. Examining the effects of fifty years worth of corporate growth on American culture, Schiller argues that corporate control over such arenas of culture as museums, theaters, performing arts centers, and public broadcasting stations has resulted in a broad manipulation of consciousness as well as an insidious form of censorship. A disturbing but enlightening picture of corporate America, Culture, Inc. exposes the agenda and methods of the corporate cultural takeover, reveals the growing threat to free access to information at home and abroad, shows how independent channels of expression have been greatly restricted, and explains how the few keep managing to benefit from the many.

Book Paradigms in Political Economy

Download or read book Paradigms in Political Economy written by Kavous Ardalan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social theory can usefully be conceived in terms of four key paradigms: functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist, and radical structuralist. The four paradigms are founded upon different assumptions about the nature of social science and the nature of society. Each generates theories, concepts, and analytical tools which are different from those of other paradigms and together they provide a more balanced understanding of the phenomenon under consideration. This book demonstrates that an understanding of these different paradigms and how they can be applied leads to a better understanding of the multi-faceted nature of political economy. Any explanation of a given phenomenon is based on a worldview. The premise of this book is that any worldview can be associated with one of the four key paradigms. Each chapter of the book takes an important phenomenon (i.e., the state, justice, freedom, democracy, liberal democracy, media, and the great recession) and discusses it from the four different viewpoints. It emphasizes that the four views expressed are equally scientific and informative. They look at the phenomenon from their certain paradigmatic perspective and together provide a more balanced understanding of the phenomenon under consideration. The diversity of economics research possibilities referred to in this book is vast. While each paradigm advocates a research strategy that is logically coherent, in terms of underlying assumptions, these vary from paradigm to paradigm. The phenomenon to be researched can be conceptualized and studied in many different ways, each generating distinctive kinds of insight and understanding. This book is for those who study political economy as well as economic theory and philosophy.

Book Ugly War Pretty Package

Download or read book Ugly War Pretty Package written by Deborah L. Jaramillo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deborah L. Jaramillo investigates cable news' presentation of the Iraq War in relation to "high concept" filmmaking. High concept films can be reduced to single-sentence summaries and feature pre-sold elements; they were considered financially safe projects that would sustain consumer interest beyond their initial theatrical run. Using high concept as a framework for the analysis of the 2003 coverage of the Iraq War -- paying close attention to how Fox News and CNN packaged and promoted the U.S. invasion of Iraq -- Ugly War, Pretty Package offers a new paradigm for understanding how television news reporting shapes our perceptions of events.

Book No Place for Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : David F. Wells
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 1994-12-20
  • ISBN : 1467464775
  • Pages : 427 pages

Download or read book No Place for Truth written by David F. Wells and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1994-12-20 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has something indeed happened to evangelical theology and to evangelical churches? According to David Wells, the evidence indicates that evangelical pastors have abandoned their traditional role as ministers of the Word to become therapists and "managers of the small enterprises we call churches." Along with their parishioners, they have abandoned genuine Christianity and biblical truth in favor of the sort of inner-directed experiential religion that now pervades Western society. Specifically, Wells explores the wholesale disappearance of theology in the church, the academy, and modern culture. Western culture as a whole, argues Wells, has been transformed by modernity, and the church has simply gone with the flow. The new environment in which we live, with its huge cities, triumphant capitalism, invasive technology, and pervasive amusements, has vanquished and homogenized the entire world. While the modern world has produced astonishing abundance, it has also taken a toll on the human spirit, emptying it of enduring meaning and morality. Seeking respite from the acids of modernity, people today have increasingly turned to religions and therapies centered on the self. And, whether consciously or not, evangelicals have taken the same path, refashioning their faith into a religion of the self. They have been coopted by modernity, have sold their soul for a mess of pottage. According to Wells, they have lost the truth that God stands outside all human experience, that he still summons sinners to repentance and belief regardless of their self-image, and that he calls his church to stand fast in his truth against the blandishments of a godless world. The first of three volumes meant to encourage renewal in evangelical theology (the other two to be written by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and Mark Noll), No Place for Truth is a contemporary jeremiad, a clarion call to all evangelicals to note well what a pass they have come to in capitulating to modernity, what a risk they are running by abandoning historic orthodoxy. It is provocative reading for scholars, ministers, seminary students, and all theologically concerned individuals.
