Download or read book Long Term Fiscal Outlook written by Gene L. Dodaro and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This statement addresses 4 key points: (1) the fed. gov¿t. long-term fiscal outlook is a matter of utmost concern; (2) this challenge is driven primarily by health care cost growth; (3) reform of health care is essential but other areas also need attention which requires a multi-pronged solution; and (4) the fed. gov¿t. faces increasing pressures yet a shrinking window of opportunity for phasing in needed adjustments. The simulations of the fed. gov¿t. long-term fiscal outlook continue to indicate that the long-term outlook is unsustainable. This update combined with an analysis of the fiscal outlook of state and local gov¿ts. demonstrates that the fiscal challenges facing all levels of gov¿t. are linked and should be considered in an integrated manner. Book BUDGET ISSUES Long Term Fiscal Challenges

Download or read book BUDGET ISSUES Long Term Fiscal Challenges written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the challenges of combating terrorism and ensuring our homeland security have come to the fore as urgent claims on our attention and on the federal budget. While there are indications that an economic recovery is underway, the recession that began last spring has had real consequences for the budget. These are important changes in the last year. At the same time, the known fiscal pressures created by the retirement of the baby boom generation and rising health care costs remain the same. Absent substantive reform of the entitlement programs, a rapid escalation of federal spending for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid beginning less than 10 years from now is virtually certain to overwhelm the rest of the federal budget. Indeed, the slowing economy and tax and spending decisions, including the increased spending levels necessary to respond to new security challenges, have increased pressures on the budget. Correspondingly, the ultimate task of addressing these needs without unduly exacerbating the long-range fiscal challenge has become much more difficult.

Book Who Will Pay Coping with Aging Societies Climate Change and Other Long Term Fiscal Challenges

Download or read book Who Will Pay Coping with Aging Societies Climate Change and Other Long Term Fiscal Challenges written by Mr.Peter S. Heller and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-11-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging populations. Weather shocks. Scarce water. Globalization. Security threats. Policymakers today confront a number of developments that threaten to burden public budgets for decades to come, or bankrupt some entirely. This book argues that governments need to make policy changes now to take account of the potential fiscal consequences of these developments. After describing how, if at all, analysts, national governments, and international organizations currently address these long-term issues, the book stresses the vital need for a multipronged approach, involving strengthened analyses, greater attention to long-term issues and risk factors in budgeting, and institutional reforms that address the myopic biases of politicians and the public.

Book Aging and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.

This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government's financial condition and fiscal outlook have deteriorated dramatically since 2000. The federal budget has gone from surplus to deficit and the nation's major reported long-term fiscal exposures-a wide range of programs, responsibilities, and activities that either explicitly or implicitly commit the government to future spending-have more than doubled. Current budget processes and measurements do not fully recognize these fiscal exposures until payments are made. Increased information and better incentives to address the long-term consequences of today's policy decisions can help put our nation on a more sound fiscal footing. Given its interest in accurate and timely information on the U.S. fiscal condition, the Senate Committee on the Budget asked us to update our study of other nations' experiences with accrual budgeting and look at other ways countries have increased attention to their long-term fiscal challenges.
