Book excerpt: There’s only one way home: straight through the enemy . . . An action-packed WWII tale filled with “snappy authenticity” (Kirkus Reviews). Four British commandos parachute into occupied Holland. Their mission: to delay and impede German communications long enough to cover the escape of an Allied unit a few miles away. Soon the countryside is in chaos, and the whole German army is hunting for them. And if they miss the rendezvous with the plane sent to extract them, it’s a long way home . . . The author of The Long Day’s Dying returns with another tense, gripping story about a daring mission in Nazi-occupied Europe. “White’s technical knowledge is authoritative.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: The story of legendary American journalist William L. Shirer and how his first-hand reporting on the rise of the Nazis and on World War II brought the devastation alive for millions of Americans When William L. Shirer started up the Berlin bureau of Edward R. Murrow's CBS News in the 1930s, he quickly became the most trusted reporter in all of Europe. Shirer hit the streets to talk to both the everyman and the disenfranchised, yet he gained the trust of the Nazi elite and through these contacts obtained a unique perspective of the party's rise to power. Unlike some of his esteemed colleagues, he did not fall for Nazi propaganda and warned early of the consequences if the Third Reich was not stopped. When the Germans swept into Austria in 1938 Shirer was the only American reporter in Vienna, and he broadcast an eyewitness account of the annexation. In 1940 he was embedded with the invading German army as it stormed into France and occupied Paris. The Nazis insisted that the armistice be reported through their channels, yet Shirer managed to circumvent the German censors and again provided the only live eyewitness account. His notoriety grew inside the Gestapo, who began to build a charge of espionage against him. His life at risk, Shirer had to escape from Berlin early in the war. When he returned in 1946 to cover the Nuremberg trials, Shirer had seen the full arc of the Nazi menace. It was that experience that inspired him to write The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich—the magisterial, definitive history of the most brutal ten years the modern world had known—which has sold millions of copies and has become a classic. Drawing on never-before-seen journals and letters from Shirer's time in Germany, award-winning reporter Steve Wick brings to life the maverick journalist as he watched history unfold and first shared it with the world.

Download or read book The Long Night written by Max Drubinsky and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events described in the book are largely based on the facts told to the author’s father by eyewitnesses after the liberation of the Belarusian city of Bobruisk. A significant part of the Bobruisk population before the German occupation was the Jews. In the center of the plot is a family of close relatives of the author, all of whom were killed in the hell of a mad catastrophe of the twentieth century. The piercingly moving history of the main characters inevitably intertwines with the burning themes and questions that torment the thoughts of contemporaries. Why did the majority of the Jewish population of Bobruisk remained to stay under German occupation? The author gives some reliable facts that reveal the causes of this tragedy. The narrative also includes the theme of the policy of state anti-Semitism in the USSR, who manipulated the public opinion of people in different countries, and the topical issue of the desperate situation of the prisoners of the Jewish ghetto due to the impossibility of successful resistance and imminent doom to death. The lyrical story of the German officer’s love for the young Jewish beauty Anya is accompanied by fascinating episodes of extreme danger and risky, courageous, unequal struggle. The author painted the mutual relations of the young heroes so vibrantly as if holding a fragile, transparent ball, protecting the young souls inside it from vulgarity, rudeness, and radical judgments. The end of the narrative is logically tragic and difficult. However, a brief epilogue pierces him with a searing ray of hope and faith that “the dead remembered live just as if they did not die.”

Book Last One Walking

Download or read book Last One Walking written by Greg Shaw and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You probably know the story of the late Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. You might not recognize the name of her husband, Charlie Soap, yet his role as a Native community organizer is no less significant. Combining memoir, history, and current affairs, Last One Walking charts for the first time the life and work of this influential Cherokee. In telling this story, author and former journalist Greg Shaw gives voice to his sources. As a longtime colleague and friend of the family, he draws on his many travels and interviews with Soap and on previously unpublished writings, including a Soap family history penned by Mankiller, included here as the book’s prologue. Shaw offers a rich profile of Soap’s singular career—particularly as a champion of water rights. In managing public infrastructure projects, housing assistance, and water development in the Cherokee Nation, Soap has exemplified ga-du-gi, the Cherokee word for community members working together for the collective good. Shaw portrays a dynamic partnership between Soap and Mankiller. Together they reignited community development for the Cherokee people by listening to everyone, including the poorest of the poor, and hearing their pleas for reliable water, a basic human need and a sacred element in Cherokee culture. Charlie Soap’s name in Cherokee, Ohni ai (ᎣᏂ ᎠᎢ), translates as “the last one walking.” In the Cherokee wolf clan, this is the member who trails the rest of the pack to watch for danger and opportunity. The last one walking forms a bond of trust with the pack’s leader. The Native American fight for land has been well chronicled, but the fight for water has not. Last One Walking helps to fill that void with a narrative that is also deeply moving, revealing on every page the spirit of ga-du-gi.
