Book Politics and Governance in Indonesia

Download or read book Politics and Governance in Indonesia written by Muradi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does an authoritarian state reform its police force following a transition to democracy? In 1998, Indonesia, the third largest country in the world, faced just such a challenge. Policing had long been managed under the jurisdiction of the military, as an instrument of the Suharto regime – and with Suharto abruptly removed from office, this was about to change. Here we see how it changed, and how far these changes were for the better. Based on direct observations by a scholar who was involved in the last days of the New Order and who saw how the police responded to regime change, this book examines the police, the new regime, and how the police was disassociated from the military in Indonesia. Providing a comprehensive historical overview of the position of police in this change of regime, the book focuses on two key areas: the differences between local and national levels, and the politicisation associated with decentralisation. Arguing that the disassociation of the Indonesian National Police from the military has achieved only limited success, the book contends that there is continued impetus for the establishment of a professional police force and modern and democratic policing, which will entail effective public control of the police. A pioneering study of the police in Indonesia, examining key issues in the post-Suharto era, this book will be of interest to scholars of Southeast Asian politics and of policing and politics in the developing world.

Book How to Survive Self Reliance in Extreme Circumstances

Download or read book How to Survive Self Reliance in Extreme Circumstances written by John Hudson and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gripping stories of near disaster and survival—and the lessons to be gleaned from them—from the British military’s chief survival instructor. When faced with near death, your survival instincts kick in. Instincts can only take you so far, however; it’s preparation and planning that can make the difference between living and dying. In How to Survive, readers will hear harrowing tales of survival and learn from them. These stories are broken down and studied, whether it’s the experience of a teenager hiking to safety as the only survivor of a plane crash in the Peruvian Amazon, a fisherman drifting for more than 400 days in an open boat across the Pacific Ocean, or a US Air Force fighter pilot forced to eject from his stealth fighter thousands of feet above the earth. John Hudson, a military survivor instructor, introduces the mindset that he feels is imperative for success: the Survival Triangle. This combination of effort, hope, and goals, along with a few practical skills, provides a premade planning template that can be used to jumpstart the whole survival process.

Book excerpt: Today, information supplied to the West about Asia is focused on the interests and concerns of Western writers; it is primarily information from analysts who view Asian affairs from a Western perspective. The Asian voice in providing information about Asia to the West remains muted. ""Under Asian Eyes"" focuses on this flow of information. It contains the main findings of a study conducted in seven Asian countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The study was carried out in 2000 and a research consultation was held in March 2001 to review the findings. The consultation critically examined the research and formulated policy recommendations. This book includes a summary of the proceedings of this consultative conference and its recommendations. It also contains contributions from five experts invited to comment on specific topics in relation to the study. ""Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC)"" series is available exclusively from ISEAS for worldwide distribution.
