Book excerpt: A must read for any Civil War buff; The Long Island Boy's is an exciting regimental history of one of the many Brooklyn regiments which fought for the Union during the American Civil War. The Long Island Boy's attempts to bring back to life the stories of the brave men of the 67th New York Volunteer Infantry. Commonly referred to as the First Long Island Infantry, or simply by their comrades as The Long Island Boy's, the regiment's origins can be traced back to fire and brimstone preacher (and staunch abolitionist) Henry Ward Beecher, who was the famous brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. At first The Long Island Boy's (as they would become known) had a very checkered beginning, and it looked as though most of them would never even see a shot fired in anger. Yet, just a year later, in 1862 until the middle of 1864, the Long Island Boy's would participate in almost every major battle of the Eastern theatre of the Civil War, participating in several bloody fights including the Battles of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Marye's Heights, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania to name just a few. Although they left Brooklyn over a 1000 strong, less than a 100 would return. Back home, they would be showered with glory and honors and then eventually forgotten. Some went on to live very storied lives, while others died in anonymity. The stories they told remained buried in attics, archives and museums for years. Until now. Through exhaustive research of war records, archives, diaries and letters home, I have attempted to give a complete accounting of where and how they fought. While many books about the Civil War focus on campaigns and General's I try to limit my focus to the men of the 67th. While tracing their role in the great tragedy that was the American Civil War, I also try to paint a more complete picture of the men who fought in the regiment, their thoughts and feelings about the issues surrounding the war, what they ate, what they did for fun and more. I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it.

Book excerpt: A biography of a German American family who grew wealthy from their Philadelphia beer brewing company in the late nineteenth century. Heirs to the renowned German-American Bergdoll Beer fortune at a young age, the Bergdoll boys used their millions to become champion race car drivers and pioneer aviation heroes in the early 1900s. Grover, the most notorious, is celebrated for his daring record-setting flights in a Wright Brothers airplane. Erwin drives a powerful Benz to win a prestigious motor car race, the equivalent of the Daytona 500. Then, just as Grover is trying to buy a bigger plane to set more records and attempt to fly to Europe a decade before Lindbergh, they’re snared by vengeful local military draft officials. Running and hiding from their war duty, the fugitives are so reviled by nationalistic Americans that two older brothers change their names to avoid infamy. Eluding capture for years with financial help from their wealthy German Mutter, the Bergdoll boys are entangled with kidnapping and murder, federal agents and bounty hunters, Nazis, and Congressional investigators, and an incredible story of release and escape from an Army jail with bribery, all the way up to the White House to search for buried gold. Hounded by the unsympathetic press and public, and congress, the Bergdoll fortune is confiscated by the federal government. Their doting mother gets into pistol shootouts with agents trying to search their mansions and country estates. Grover remains one step ahead of bungling lawmen by hiding in Germany and secretly traveling into and out of America on fake passports and producing kinderreiche Familie with his attractive German wife.

Frank Dimatteo was born into a family of mob hitmen. His father and godfather were shooters and bodyguards for infamous Mafia legends the Gallo brothers. His uncle was a capo in the Genovese crime family and bodyguard to Frank Costello. With family connections like those, Frank knew everybody in the neighborhood—and they knew him. After dropping out of high school, Frank lived gangster-style with the boys on President Street. In this lively memoir, Frank tells it like it really was growing up in the mob. He shares wild stories about everyone from the old-school Mafia dons and infamous “five families” to the new-breed “independents” who didn’t answer to nobody. He had a front row seat as the Gallo gang waged war against wiseguys with more power, more money, and more guns. And he reveals the shocking deathbed confessions that will blow the lid off the sordid deeds, stunning betrayals, and all-too-secret history of the American Mafia. The President Street Boys was originally self-published as Lion in the Basement.
