Book excerpt: Mike Malloy was like so many of our young men, all searching for their place in life. The Vietnam War put Mike on a road he didn't want and couldn't handle. The battle field is one hell of a place for a young man to grow up, but you grow up fast or not at all. In war people are killed, most of them intentionally, but some get killed by carelessness or by accidents that can't be controlled. The killing of an old man put Mike on a road his mind couldn't cope with, driving him into the depths of depression and loneliness. This is his story:

Book excerpt: For the lonesome soldier voices in the night brings regret and depression in the daylight. For some it's a legacy of pain, for some its pride, for all PTSD can be torture. My name is Jackson and I am only one of the many returning soldiers that suffer from invisible wounds. "Step into my life, for a few minutes. I am an American soldier in the Army, just back from Iraq. This is where I lived and fought beside my friends, my family as we grew to think of one another, as we battled insurgents. Try to understand our dilemma when we return home. I am a son, I am a father, I am a husband, I am a soldier, I am a man that is conflicted, I am, I was, I hope to be again." Follow my journey. If you ask any soldier that has experienced the loss of a fellow soldier, the pelleting rain of shrapnel or the onset of relentless machine gun fire, they will tell you that all they really want is peace, to be safe at home. A soldier knows what the risk and cost are, but we all willingly fight for freedom for all.

Book The British Folk Revival

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr Michael Brocken
  • Publisher : Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
  • Release : 2013-01-28
  • ISBN : 1409493601

Download or read book The British Folk Revival written by Dr Michael Brocken and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Folk Revival is the very first historical and theoretical work to consider the post-war folk revival in Britain from a popular music studies perspective. Michael Brocken provides a historical narrative of the folk revival from the 1940s up until the 1990s, beginning with the emergence of the revival from within and around the left-wing movements of the 1940s and 1950s. Key figures and organizations such as the Workers' Music Association, the BBC, the English Folk Dance and Song Society, A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl are examined closely. By looking at the work of British Communist Party splinter groups it is possible to see the refraction of folk music as a political tool. Brocken openly challenges folk historicity and internal narrative by discussing the convergence of folk and pop during the 1950s and 1960s. The significant development of the folk/rock hybrid is considered alongside 'class', 'Americana', radio and the strength of pop culture. Brocken shows how the dichotomy of artistic (natural) versus industry (mass-produced) music since the 1970s has led to a fragmentation and constriction of the folk revival. The study concludes with a look at the upsurge of the folk music industry, the growth of festivals and the implications of the Internet for the British folk revival. Brocken suggests the way forward should involve an acknowledgement that folk music is not superior to but is, in fact, a form of popular music. The book will create lively debate among the folk music fraternity and popular music scholars, as well as folklorists and ethnomusicologists. A unique discography and history of the Topic Record label is also included.

Narrated by his third daughter, Willis's story of sacrifice and survival follows his journey as he unveils memories and reflects on life experiences as he falls in love, trains for war, and crosses the ocean to battle the enemy as a member of a battalion that battered German positions for over three hundred days. While conveying his fears, love for his fellow soldiers, despair, and ultimately his desire to survive, Willis shines a light on members of a courageous generation that persevered under horrific conditions to ensure freedom.

Book The Road to the Throne

Download or read book The Road to the Throne written by Hing Ming Hung and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The stories of the Chinese great emperors reflect the ancient Chinese philosophy, ideology, their wisdom and their ways of administration. Liu Bang is an outstanding example. Rising from a peasant background to become Emperor, he founded the Han Dynasty which lasted for about four hundred years and essentially laid the foundations of China as we know it. Liu Bang (256 BC?195 BC), posthumously called Emperor Gaozu, was a low-ranking functionary in an obscure corner of the realm when he caught the wave of the great uprisings against the Qin Dynasty. First as leader of a local contingent and then as general of larger and larger armies, he eventually overthrew the despotic Qin emperor. Today, the Han are the majority ethnic identity in China. This is the story of the rise of Emperor Gaozu, his alliances and his rivalries, and the priceless partnership provided by his chief military strategist Zhang Liang, who planned victorious campaigns from a distance of 1000 miles; Xiao He, who stabilized the state, pacified the people, and assured the food supply to the army; and General Han Xin, who commanded the Han army in its conquest of the State of Wei, the State of Zhao, the State of Yan and the State of Qi and played a great role in the defeat of Xiang Yu.
