Book Lone Star Guide to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex Revised

Download or read book Lone Star Guide to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex Revised written by Robert R. Rafferty and published by Taylor Trade Publishing. This book was released on 2003-08-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is a nearly 40-mile long mega-metropolitan area anchored by Dallas on one end and Fort Worth on the other, with the area between filled in with more than a dozen attractive, interconnected cities. Among the unheralded facts about these interlocking cities are that they contain more restaurants per capita than New York City (5,000 in Dallas alone), are home to all the major professional sports (including NASCAR and rodeo), and house 30 museums. This guidebook gives readers detailed information on the wide range of choices in lodging, restaurants, and everything worth seeing and doing, not only in Dallas and Fort Worth, but in eleven of the smaller cities between the two. They include: Addison, Arlington, Farmers Branch, Garland, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Irving, Mesquite, North Richland Hills, Plano and Richardson. In addition to the categories one would normally expect in a guide book, the authors have started each city listing with a description of free visitor services, as well as "Bird's Eye View" spots - great places to get a panoramic view of the city. (In Arlington it's the top of an oil derrick at Six Flags.) Finally, for the truly adventurous, there are plenty of "Offbeat" places of unusual interest that don't fit into the routine tourist categories.

Campfire Stew: Fort Worth's Girl Scout Troop 11 is the inspiring and humorous story of a very special Texas Girl Scout troop whose members have stayed together for seventy years. The troop began in 1949 as eighteen feisty, chatty, and lively five-and-six-year-old girls. They grew into outstanding women who are still impacting the world in which they live. Campfire Stew is both a favorite dish of the troop and a metaphor for the troop itself-each girl/woman is one ingredient, good by herself, but so much better when mixed together with the others.

Book Hockey Night in Dixie

Download or read book Hockey Night in Dixie written by Jon C. Stott and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s, the geography of minor-league professional hockey changed radically, moving from its roots in the Canadian Maritime provinces, New England and the Midwestern states into the American south. In addition to cities like Dallas, Charlotte, Norfolk and Oklahoma City, which had long traditions of minor-league hockey, unlikely places such as Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Little Rock and Augusta hosted teams. Over an 18-year period, minor-league hockey was played in 72 different southern cities, and at one point there were more minor-league teams in Texas than in all of Canada, making Texas the place where many players learned their hockey skills. Hockey Night in Dixie examines this phenomenon with a historical overview of the period, including interviews with people involved in the founding and early years of each of the 13 leagues. There are also in-depth portraits of four teams, one from each of the four lower minor leagues that played during the 2005–06 season. These portraits feature interviews with owners, coaches, players, officials, fans and reporters. Amply illustrated with photographs, Hockey Night in Dixie paints a vivid picture of this extraordinary development in minor-league sports.

Book Skating on Air

Download or read book Skating on Air written by Kelli Lawrence and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all winter sports, none is so widely watched and commented upon by the media as figure skating, which is often considered the Winter Olympics' centerpiece. This critical text examines the ways in which media attention has gradually altered and affected the sport, from the early appearances of Sonja Henie, to skating's gradual audience growth via television, and to the ramifications of the scandals in the 1994 and 2002 Olympics. The topic is illuminated by more than 30 interviews with commentators, skaters, producers, directors and others. In addition to numerous photos, illustrations show the compulsory figures for which "figure skating" got its name, as well as a sample of the charted-out "camera blocking" for TV directors. Appendices include collected anecdotes from early broadcasting experiences; a profile of broadcaster Jim McKay; and commentary from Carol Heiss on her 1961 musical Snow White and the Three Stooges.

Book Notes from Beyond the Fringe

Download or read book Notes from Beyond the Fringe written by Greg Stott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one ever accused Greg Stott of not having a sense of humor. His retelling of experiences often left his readers begging for more and now there is an entire book dedicated to the events that comprise life (as he knows it). Notes from Beyond the Fringe is a unique and entertaining collection of stories based on one man's view of the world around him. With a distinct and engaging voice, Stott relates his life through vignettes that, while seemingly ordinary in nature, either wind up impacting him or are subsequently addressed by him in a manner that is anything but ordinary. His subjects encompass a wide variety of topics familiar to just about everybody but are liberally skewed in the retelling by influences that began with growing up in a pre-tofu California in the 1950's, were adjusted as a result of teen life endured in a boarding school, befogged by a misspent youth and eventually warped from the effects of being a single parent. Very little escapes Stott's attention and subsequent 'adjustments' to his concept of reality. Whether describing how to deliver 400+ newspapers at speed in a 1965 Volkswagen, explaining difficult situations to his pre-pubescent tax deduction, the acquisition of proper Texas BBQ etiquette or relating his seemingly endless failures in dealing with animals, offspring, relationships, hot rods and amateur carpentry, the stories are both original and told with a perspective that can only come about as the result severe mental instability. Be prepared to spend hours attempting to understand how anyone could have survived so long in an uncontrolled environment and enjoying the humor that is, more often than not, related at the author's expense in Notes from Beyond the Fringe. Your perspective on the world will never be the same.
