This distressing occurrence has pre sented itself twice in my practice - each time in St. Mary's Hospital. Cass 1.-on June 13th, 1855, I performed ex traction on the right eye of Mrs. B aged sev enty, who had long attended as an outpatient. Each eye presented a hard, amber-coloured cat met. The globes were hard and rather prominent, anterior chamber full; irides natural in colour; pupils ordinarily motionless but dilating under atropine. She could distinguish light from dark ness, and the shadow of a hand. Some years previously she had sufl'ered from deep-seated pain m the eyeballs, with muses; and had long been teased with irregular gout. Is there more regularity in cases where the duration of gestation, or the date of the occurrence of labour, is calculat ed from the time of a single coitus? Before en tering upon this topic, it must be premised, that in the case of the catamenia frequent mistakes are made by the most careful women respecting the time of its last appearance. Errors, intentional or unintentional, are still more likely to occur in fixing the time of the coitus which has resulted in impregnation. Many of these cases occur in unmarried women, in whom there is a very con stant tendency to declare that the fruitful coitus has been a solitary one. Dr. Reid, in the paper referred to, collects forty-three instances of con ception after single c01tus, all of them resting up on testimony as credible as can be obtained in these cases. Itis a simple case of hypertrophy, just as you oh serve ia instances of the heart. When the heart is liypertmpliied, for the most part you see no new deposit, no alteration of structure, except that it becomes larger and thicker than it should be, and, generally speaking, firmer also than it should be. ()r, in the case of the heart if the cavity be dilated, there is frequently great additional substance without any increase of the thick ness of its parietes, because, being dilated, it would grow thinner if there were no ia creased deposition. This is simply a case of overgrown liver. It is the red part that is chiefly hypertrophied, and you perceive it is exceedingly red, except in one or two parts near the surface, where it is rather paler than it ought to be, but this part is of very small extent.
