Download or read book A Commentary on the Letters of John written by Birger Olsson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long history of interpretation of the three Johannine letters has been largely characterized, at least since Irenaeus in the late second century, by the assumption that the Elder was addressing the Gnostic heresy. In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple's) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists' misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an "advanced," spiritualizing manner.Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly "intra-Jewish" problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community's life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel's ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

Download or read book Theological Wordbook written by John F. Walvoord and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2000-10-17 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulating theology is an oxymoron for most people. "Theology" sounds like something for the severely intellectual, full of complicated ideas that escape the typical Christian reader. In reality, theology is meant to enhance our understanding of God. Most of the words that make up the Christian vocabulary are common words, drawn from the realities of life, and therefore are easily applicable to real life. Based on this premise four leading authors have come together to create this excellent volume. The Theological Wordbook tackles tough words, such as propitiation, regeneration, righteousness, and predestination, but it does so in a natural, plain-spoken manner designed to be enlightening rather than evasive. Also literally dozens of words you are likely to use every day, such as forgiveness, mind, peace, rest, family, truth, and guilt, have profound biblical value. Using The Theological Wordbook can enable you to more fully appreciate what the Bible teaches on these crucial topics and how each of these terms is relevant for life today. As this happens, your understanding of God will expand. And as the words you use, speak, and hear in the community of faith become more familiar, you will become more connected to your own spiritual heritage. The Theological Wordbook is the link between understanding God's Word in your head and accepting it in your heart.

In Jesus Through Many Eyes, Stephen Neill makes the case convincingly for a unified faith underlying the many traditions and interpretations of Jesus within scripture, which can be summed up in the words Resurrection-Spirit-Reconciliation. First published in 1976, his exposition remains relevant to general readers and specialist scholars alike. Neill provides detailed explanations of more obscure concepts and references, along with comprehensive notes and bibliographies to each chapter, making this an ideal introductory textbook. Meanwhile, those familiar with his arguments will benefit from new insights and interpretations.
