Book Conceptual Systems

  • Publisher : Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Conceptual Systems written by Pavel Materna and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all frequently use the word "concept". Yet, do we know what we mean using this word in sundry contexts? Can we say, for example, that there can be several concepts of an object? Or can we state that concepts develop? What type of relation connects concepts with the expressions of a natural language? What is the meaning of an expression? Is Quine's 'stimulus meaning' the only possibility of defining meaning? The author of this book (and of "Concepts and Objects", 1998) offers some answers to these (and many other) questions from the viewpoint of transparent intensional logic, which was founded by the late Czech logician Pavel Tich 'y.

Book Formalizing Medieval Logical Theories

Download or read book Formalizing Medieval Logical Theories written by Catarina Dutilh Novaes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents formalizations of three important medieval logical theories: supposition, consequence and obligations. These are based on innovative vantage points: supposition theories as algorithmic hermeneutics, theories of consequence analyzed with tools borrowed from model-theory and two-dimensional semantics, and obligations as logical games. The analysis of medieval logic is relevant for the modern philosopher and logician. This is the first book to render medieval logical theories accessible to the modern philosopher.

Book Philosophy of Logical Systems

Download or read book Philosophy of Logical Systems written by Jaroslav Peregrin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the hasty development of modern logic, especially its introducing and embracing various kinds of artificial languages and moving from the study of natural languages to that of artificial ones. This shift seemed extremely helpful and managed to elevate logic to a new level of rigor and clarity. However, the change that logic underwent in this way was in no way insignificant, and it is also far from an insignificant matter to determine to what extent the "new logic" only engaged new and more powerful instruments to answer the questions posed by the "old" one, and to what extent it replaced these questions with new ones. Hence, this movement has generated brand new kinds of philosophical problems that have still not been dealt with systematically. Philosophy of Logical Systems addresses these new kinds of philosophical problems that are intertwined with the development of modern logic. Jaroslav Peregrin analyzes the rationale behind the introduction of the artificial languages of logic; classifies the various tools which were adopted to build such languages; gives an overview of the various kinds of languages introduced in the course of modern logic and the motifs of their employment; discusses what can actually be achieved by relocating the problems of logic from natural language into them; and reaches certain conclusions with respect to the possibilities and limitations of this "formal turn" of logic. This book is both an important scholarly contribution to the philosophy of logic and a systematic survey of the standard (and not so standard) logical systems that were established during the short history of modern logic.

Book Procedural Semantics for Hyperintensional Logic

Download or read book Procedural Semantics for Hyperintensional Logic written by Marie Duží and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about logical analysis of natural language. Since we humans communicate by means of natural language, we need a tool that helps us to understand in a precise manner how the logical and formal mechanisms of natural language work. Moreover, in the age of computers, we need to communicate both with and through computers as well. Transparent Intensional Logic is a tool that is helpful in making our communication and reasoning smooth and precise. It deals with all kinds of linguistic context in a fully compositional and anti-contextual way.

Book Science and Other Cultures

Download or read book Science and Other Cultures written by Sandra Harding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering new book, Sandra Harding and Robert Figueroa bring together an important collection of original essays by leading philosophers exploring an extensive range of diversity issues for the philosophy of science and technology. The essays gathered in this volume extend current philosophical discussion of science and technology beyond the standard feminist and gender analyses that have flourished over the past two decades, by bringing a thorough and truly diverse set of cultural, racial, and ethical concerns to bear on questioning in these areas. Science and Other Cultures charts important new directions in ongoing discussions of science and technology, and makes a significant contribution to both scholarly and teaching resources available in the field.
