Download or read book The Logan Chronicles written by Kenneth Donadio and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kael Logan was born and raised on the lower east side of New York City during the late eighteen hundreds. These were tough times and Kael found himself involved in a gang war between the Italians and Irish for control of the city. After his childhood buddy was murdered and a vendetta was placed on Kael's life he fled the city. He traveled west in search of gold but instead found himself in another war. This time it was the battle of Glorietta Pass during the beginning of the Civil War. Ironically, this opened the door for Kael to become a U.S. Deputy Marshal. These are the accounts of his life and times as a peace officer. His younger Brother Ronny Logan would eventually join up with him, as they traversed the rough terrain of the Old West. Kael and Ron were frequently assigned to protect the interests of the railroad tycoon Jay Gould. This assignment would lead them to encounter many famous and infamous people of the era. The life of a U.S Deputy Marshal was often short lived and rarely celebrated. These men were instrumental in bringing civility to the wild west. They were underpaid and unappreciated for the most part but were true heroes in every sense of the word.

Book excerpt: My name is Romeo Harmon and I'm the new sheriff of Prosper Woods, a small California town smack dab in the middle of the sequoia forest. People around here tell me the town hasn't changed a whole hell of a lot since power lines and telephones were installed. It's a quaint place with a movie theater that shows the old classics, a saloon with a decent choice of beer, a general store with a grumpy old coot behind the till, a gas station with a pimply young mechanic, and a bed and breakfast that attracts tourists and vacation money. I think I'm gonna like it here. My name is Vincent Lasco. I've searched a long time to find a new place to settle down. Because of what I am, I need to pull up stakes and start over every twenty years or so-before people realize that I don't age anymore. Prosper Woods has everything a man like me could ever want. Though there aren't many humans, it doesn't really matter. I'm so old, I don't need to eat very often and there's no reason to expose myself to the locals whom I hope to call friends some day. I think I'm gonna like it here. There's newcomers in town. Prosper Woods is a nice place as long as you're passing through. I wonder how long these folks will stay once they find out what's really going on here. Somehow...I don't think they're gonna like it here.(True Knight is the prequel to the Prosper Woods Chronicles and includes an excerpt from True Mate, the first book in the new series)

Download or read book Broken Ground written by William Logan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Broken Ground, William Logan explores the works of canonical and contemporary poets, rediscovering the lushness of imagination and depth of feeling that distinguish poetry as a literary art. The book includes long essays on Emily Dickinson’s envelopes, Ezra Pound’s wrestling with Chinese, Robert Frost’s letters, Philip Larkin’s train station, and Mrs. Custer’s volume of Tennyson, each teasing out the depths beneath the surface of the page. Broken Ground also presents the latest run of Logan’s infamous poetry chronicles and reviews, which for twenty-five years have bedeviled American verse. Logan believes that poetry criticism must be both adventurous and forthright—and that no reader should settle for being told that every poet is a genius. Among the poets under review by the “preeminent poet-critic of his generation” and “most hated man in American poetry” are Anne Carson, Jorie Graham, Paul Muldoon, John Ashbery, Geoffrey Hill, Louise Glück, John Berryman, Marianne Moore, Frederick Seidel, Les Murray, Yusef Komunyakaa, Sharon Olds, Johnny Cash, James Franco, and the former archbishop of Canterbury. Logan’s criticism stands on the broken ground of poetry, soaked in history and soiled by it. These essays and reviews work in the deep undercurrents of our poetry, judging the weak and the strong but finding in weakness and strength what endures.
