Book The Log of a Forty Niner

Download or read book The Log of a Forty Niner written by Carolyn Hale Russ and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Log of a Forty-Niner: Journal of a Voyage From Newbury-Port to San Francisco in the Brig. Genl; Worth, Commanded by Captain Samuel Hatton True incidents chronicled by an author of his personal experiences, wherein he enacts the role of hero or victim are always, I think, filled with lively interest to the reader. When such circumstances are closely woven into the woof of a country's early memorials, when the course Of tim'e in its progress leaves certain out-standing tracings, like distinct figures slowly threaded upon a beautiful and symmetrical tapestry, then these tracings become history. Within the pages of this book are held the records of many events and thrilling adventures, in which my father was the chief actor, during the years of 1849 to 1854, both in California and the at that time great unexplored northwest. Book The Diary of a Forty niner

Download or read book The Diary of a Forty niner written by Chauncey L. Canfield and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chauncey de Leon Canfield (1843-1909) first published "The diary of a forty-niner" in 1906, and 1,200 of the 2,000 copies in that edition were burned. Joseph Gaer's Bibliography of California literature describes this book as written in the form of a diary, but fictional. The diary of a forty-niner (1920) reprints Canfield's 1906 publication. It purports to be the diary of Alfred T. Jackson, of Litchfield County, Connecticut, during his days as a gold prospector, 1850-1852. Jackson offers first-hand accounts of Nevada City and neighboring Rock Creek; descriptions of Grass Valley, North and South Yuba Valleys, and the Sierra Mountains; details of gold mining with accounts of pioneer overland crossings, and foreign mineworkers (including Chinese). Entries concerning Jackson's personal life include details of his courtship of a French woman in the camps.
