Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 19: January, 1898 It takes a surprisingly large amount of heat to raise the temperature of half a ton of water through 80 or 90 degrees. We have seen that we should have to use 77 pounds of steam every minute, in order to raise the temperature of 8,980pounds of water from 82 up to 170 in minutes. This is at the rate of 77 x 60= pounds of steam per hour; and allowing 30 pounds per hour as the equivalent of a horse-power, we see that, in order to do the heating at this rate, we should have to have a boiler capacity of at least horse-power. Book The Locomotive Vol 27

Download or read book The Locomotive Vol 27 written by Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 27: January, 1908 Mr. Pierce was a republican in politics, but had never held any political office. Indeed, he was of so retiring a disposition that the publicity inseparable from such a position would have been exceedingly distasteful to him. He was a member of the Fourth Congregational Church of Hartford, and had been president of its board of trustees from the time the church was incorporated. He was, in fact, the leading layman in the church. And he had given great personal attention to the musical features of its services in particular, although his influence extended to all its departments. He was deeply interested in the mission work done by the institution now known as Warburton Chapel. He joined it in November, 1854, at which time it was known as the Union Sunday School, and occupied Washington Hall, on State Street. He became assistant superintendent of the organization about 1858 or 1859, and continued his active connection with it until October, 1880, when he withdrew from personal participation in the work, though his interest in it was always sustained. Here, as in the Fourth Church, he gave especial attention to the musical part of the services. Mr. Pierce was universally admitted to be one of the highest authorities upon steam boiler inspection and insurance. He wrote nothing upon the subject, however, but was content to apply his knowledge solely to the advancement of the company with which he was identified. He was a man of strongly scientific tastes, and in earlier life he devoted much time to microscopic work, and par ticularly to the study of the various forms of animal and vegetable life that occur in the vicinity of Hartford. Indeed, his eyesight was somewhat affected from this cause at one time, though the impairment was not permanent. There can be little doubt but that his microscopic work, taken in connection with his other scientific tendencies, constituted one of the earliest bonds of friend ship between himself and Mr. J. M. Allen, through whom Mr. Pierce became secretary. In later years he was forced to discontinue his microscopic work, but he maintained, to the last, the keenest interest in scientific progress along all lines, and he enjoyed nothing more than listening to an account of recent investigations in any field of knowledge whatever. Book The Locomotive Vol 1

Download or read book The Locomotive Vol 1 written by Steam Boiler Inspection and Insuranc Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 1: January, 1880 If we find that a boiler has its shell and furnace rigidly stayed together with the ends of stays set with round pins fitting nicely in round holes, and the stays sufficiently strong and numerous to act as struts, then every motion of the furnace will be communicated to the shell. In this particular case the number of the ex treme thermal changes corresponds with the number of times that steam has been raised during a period of about days, from May 1, 1874, to Oct. 28, 1879. Deducting the idle days, we have a fair statement of the number of the motions due to unequal expansion. We should hardly expect to find so many stays each bearing its exact proportion of the stress, and under unfavorable circumstances of construction they might be set so that a little additional distention or compres sion of the arch of the wagon top might be aecom plished with each stay or even row of stays. The shell, which yields readily to a comparatively slight local force when not supported in form by internal pressure, would certainly sufi'er such distortion of form as would place it in a very unfavorable condition to sustain the pressure of steam in addition to the thrust of the expand ing furnace. Book The Locomotive Vol 18

Download or read book The Locomotive Vol 18 written by Hartford Steam Boiler Inspectio Company and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 18: January, 1897 The difficulty of discovering a crack of this kind is obvious enough, because the crack is entirely out of sight, and as it does not often run into a rivet-hole, it cannot be detected by leakage, until it has actually perforated the plate in some spot. These hidden fractures can sometimes be detected by the presence of radiating, hair-like branch cracks, extending out from under the inside lap. These faint indications might easily be overlooked by the most careful and competent inspector, especially as the joints that are thus affected are often in such a position that minute examination of them is not possible; and too frequently the radiating cracks do not exist at all, so that there is no human means of knowing the true state of the joint, without cutting out the rivets, and separating the plates, - a proceeding altogether too heroic to be in favor among boiler owners, unless there is some tangible reason for suspecting the defect. The dotted lines in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show where the edge of the inside plate came, in each case. Numerous explosions have been caused by hidden cracks of this kind, with the most disastrous consequences; and hence it is important to discover their cause, if this be possible, and to take precautions against them. If the plates are hard, or tend toward brittleness, they may be so weakened by punching the rivet-holes that a subsequent fracture of some kind, along the joint, may be reasonably expected. It is, therefore, of the first importance to build the boiler of material that has proper ductility. Most of the fractures of the plate at the joint, however, are undoubtedly due to bending the plates in the rolls. From thirty to forty percent, of the sectional area of the plate is removed, along the line of the joint, by the act of punching or drilling the rivet-holes; and when the part that is thus weakened is passing through the rolls, the curvature of the plates at this point is sensibly increased, owing to the greater readiness of the weakened spot to yield to the stress imposed by the rolls. Download or read book The Locomotive Vol 23 written by Steam Boiler Inspection and Insuranc Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 23: January, 1902 In the course of time Fury became a little more peaceable and would allow a few favored acquaintances around the place; but no stranger ever got so much as one foot inside the inclosure without hastening to take it out again before the dog could fasten to it. Fury earned his salary. One day a wandering pig came nosing around the inclosure, found a loose place in the fence, and made his way in. Now the West Virginian breed of pig is not the fat, lazy; and inert porker of the farmyard. He is a lean, razor-backed, sinewy animal who has had to make his own way in the world for so long that he is thoroughly equipped to take care Of himself. The only thing he considers it worth while to get out Of the way of is a railroad train, and he sometimes contests the right of way with that, under which circumstances both train and pig commonly leave the track together. Either Fury didn't understand the nature of the invader, or his lordly career had pufl'ed him up with an undue sense of his own abilities. With a snarl of concentrated rage he made for the trespasser, and launched his powerful body like a thunderbolt straight at piggy's throat. There was a wild clamor Of grunts, squeals, growls, and howls that brought Mr. Stewart and the rest out in haste. All they could see was a mad whirl of dust and writhing bodies. Then a streak emerged from the whirl. It was Fury. Away he went, yelling murder at every leap, and the pig after him. After two circuits Of the yard, Fury noted the hole in the fence, and with a yelp of mingled joy and shame started through it. It was more of a squeeze for piggy, but he got through, too. There was no doubt about his intentions; he meant murder. Fury realized it. He took to the railroad track and headed eastward. When the curve, half a mile up the road, hid him from view, the pursuer was running head down and tail up, with a vigor which suggested that obstinacy Of pursuit for which his kind is proverbial. The number of contributors, inventors, locomotive works and mechanical journals who have rendered assistance are too numer ous to admit of my thanking them by name, but I beg here to renew to them all the acknowledgments which have already been made to each in person.
