Book Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America

Download or read book Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America written by R. A. LeMassena and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many other books, Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America began as a modest attempt to chronicle a certain type of locomotive---in this case, the Mallet-articulated locomotive in the U.S.A. This project soon ballooned into unanticipated magnitude. It wasn't long before it became evident that Canadian and Mexican engines could not logically be ignored; they were an important part of the story. After that, one thing quickly led to another. By including the double-truck Fairlies, one was obliged to recognize their single-truck counterparts, as well as several mechanical hybrids which defied accurate classification. Locomotives having geared trucks were indeed articulated; thus, something had to be said about them. Then, there was the booster-engine which temporarily transformed ordinary locomotives into pseudo-articulateds. The latter-day duplex-drive locomotives could properly have been omitted; however, that would have concealed an important episode of motive-power progress wherein one railroad tried to avoid articulation. Consequently, duplex-drive locomotives are included, too.The author's efforts to locate suitable photographs to illustrate this chronicle have been remarkably successful--and there have been few locomotives whose portraits have been completely elusive. Considering the objective was to obtain views of every kind of articulated steam locomotive on every major railroad, this was no easy task. However, the end result is a dazzling collection of over 600 photographs--including more than 32 color views--some of them quite rare.

Book The Locomotive Vol 1

Download or read book The Locomotive Vol 1 written by Steam Boiler Inspection and Insuranc Co and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 1: January, 1880 If we find that a boiler has its shell and furnace rigidly stayed together with the ends of stays set with round pins fitting nicely in round holes, and the stays sufficiently strong and numerous to act as struts, then every motion of the furnace will be communicated to the shell. In this particular case the number of the ex treme thermal changes corresponds with the number of times that steam has been raised during a period of about days, from May 1, 1874, to Oct. 28, 1879. Deducting the idle days, we have a fair statement of the number of the motions due to unequal expansion. We should hardly expect to find so many stays each bearing its exact proportion of the stress, and under unfavorable circumstances of construction they might be set so that a little additional distention or compres sion of the arch of the wagon top might be aecom plished with each stay or even row of stays. The shell, which yields readily to a comparatively slight local force when not supported in form by internal pressure, would certainly sufi'er such distortion of form as would place it in a very unfavorable condition to sustain the pressure of steam in addition to the thrust of the expand ing furnace. Book The Locomotive of War

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

Download or read book The Locomotive of War written by Peter Clarke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year for 2017 'War, comrades,' declared Trotsky, 'is a great locomotive of history.' He was thought to be acknowledging the opportunity the First World War had offered the Bolsheviks to seize power in Russia in 1917. Twentieth-century warfare, based on new technologies and mass armies, certainly saw the locomotive power of war geared up to an unprecedented level. Peter Clarke explores the crucial ways in which war can be seen as a prime mover of history in the twentieth century through the eyes of five major figures. In Britain two wartime prime ministers – first David Lloyd George, later Winston Churchill – found their careers made and unmade by the unprecedented challenges they faced. In the United States, two presidents elected in peacetime – Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt – likewise found that war drastically changed their agenda. And it was through the experience of war that the economic ideas of John Maynard Keynes were shaped and came to exert wide influence. When the United States entered the First World War in 1917, President Wilson famously declared: 'The world must be made safe for democracy.' This liberal prospectus was to be tested in the subsequent peace treaty, one that was to be bitterly remembered by Germans for its 'war guilt clause'. But both in the making of the war and the making of the peace the issue of guilt did not suddenly materialise out of thin air. As Clarke's narrative shows, it was an integral component of the Anglo-American liberal tradition. The Locomotive of War is a forensic and punctilious examination of both the interplay between key figures in the context of the unprecedented all-out wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45 and the broader dynamics of history in this extraordinary period. Deeply revealing and insightful, it is history of the highest calibre.
