Book The Locations of Headlamps and Driver Eye Positions in Vehicles Sold in the U S A

Download or read book The Locations of Headlamps and Driver Eye Positions in Vehicles Sold in the U S A written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information about the locations of headlamps and driver eye positions is important in estimating the performance of a variety of traffic-safety equipment, such as retroreflective traffic signs and markings, rearview mirrors, and headlamps. Driver eye height is also an important factor in determining safe sight distances on vertical curves. However, no comprehensive database concerning the locations of headlamps and driver eye positions exists for the current U.S. fleet. The present study was designed to obtain such information for vehicles currently sold in the U.S. The information was derived from the 15 best-selling cars and the 15 best-selling light trucks and vans. These 30 vehicles represent 52% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. in 1995. For headlamp locations, actual vehicle measurements were made. For driver eye positions, dimensional information provided by vehicles manufacturers was used to estimate the location of the driver seating reference point. An UMTRI-developed computer model that predicts the relationship of the driver eye position to the driver seating reference point was then used to calculate driver eye positions. The obtained information includes sales-weighted mean dimensions for the locations of headlamps and driver eye positions, calculated separately for cars and for light trucks and vans.

Book Sign and Pavement Marking Visibility from the Perspective of Commercial Vehicle Drivers

Download or read book Sign and Pavement Marking Visibility from the Perspective of Commercial Vehicle Drivers written by Melisa Dayle Finley and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Texas, commercial vehicle safety is increasing in priority due to the rising volume of truck traffic and the disproportionate percentage of crashes and fatalities involving large trucks. One particular safety issue is the visibility of signing and pavement markings at night from a commercial vehicle driver's perspective. Through a nighttime controlled field study, the relationship between vehicle type (passenger car versus commercial vehicle) and sign/pavement marking material was evaluated in terms of the legibility distance of signs and the end detection distance of pavement markings. Additional research issues included investigations among sign type (guide, destination, and speed limit) and age (young, middle-aged, and old).

Book From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling

Download or read book From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling written by Umberto Cugini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IFIP Working Group 5.2 has organized a series of workshops aimed at presenting and discussing current issues and future perspectives of Geometric Modeling in the CAD environment. From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling comprises the proceedings of the seventh GEO workshop, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Parma, Italy in October 2000. The workshop looked at new paradigms for CAD including the evolution of geometric-centric CAD systems, modeling of non-rigid materials, shape modeling, geometric modeling and virtual prototyping, and new methods of interaction with geometric models. The seventeen included papers provide an interesting overview of the evolution of geometric centric modeling into shape modeling. Also included is an invited speaker paper, which discusses the foundation of the next generation of CAD systems, where shape and function enhance geometric descriptions. The main topics discussed in the book are: Theoretical foundation for solids and surfaces; Computational basis for geometric modeling; Methods of interaction with geometric models; Industrial and other applications of geometric modeling; New paradigms of geometric modeling for CAD; Shape modeling. From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling is essential reading for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, systems developers of advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing systems, and engineers involved in industrial applications.

Book Headlamp Illumination Provided to Sign Positions by Passenger Vehicles

Download or read book Headlamp Illumination Provided to Sign Positions by Passenger Vehicles written by Susan T. Chrysler and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic sign visibility at night is largely determined by sign luminance. Sign luminance, in turn, is determined by viewing geometry, retroreflective characteristics of the sign material, and headlamp illumination. Computer modeling of sign luminance has advanced to allow sign luminance to be predicted based on data sets of retroreflective material performance and headlamp luminous intensity matrices. This research project sought to assess the amount and variability of illumination provided to sign positions by a sample of Texas vehicles. The Texas Transportation Institute measured vehicle dimensions and headlamp illuminance at prespecified points representing typical sign locations. Data collection included 25 passenger cars and 21 light trucks and vans. Vehicles were measured without aiming, but after cleaning the headlamps. Each lamp was measured independently and total illuminance at sign locations was calculated. The project found that the vehicle dimensions specified in computer models encompassed the vehicles measured. The illumination values obtained were also in the range of those provided by the composite lamps in the existing computer models. Theoretical sign luminance values for different types of retroreflective sheeting were calculated using the median illumination values from the vehicles measured. The project confirms the validity of using computer models to predict sign luminance. It also confirmed current TxDOT retroreflective sheeting policy. It is recommended that TxDOT consistently aim the headlamps of vehicles used to perform nighttime sign inspections to assure consistency of sign appearance.

Book A Determination of the Appropriateness of Virginia s Retroreflective Sign Sheeting Specification for Fluorescent Orange Construction and Maintenance Signs

Download or read book A Determination of the Appropriateness of Virginia s Retroreflective Sign Sheeting Specification for Fluorescent Orange Construction and Maintenance Signs written by Stephen C. Brich and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic through a highway network during nighttime conditions, traffic signs are either illuminated or made retroreflective. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) requires that retroreflective sheeting used on construction and maintenance activity signs be a fluorescent prismatic lens type capable of being retroreflective at entrance angles as great as 50 deg with observation angles of 0.2 and 0.5 deg. Because the validity of the 50-deg entrance angle requirement was questioned, this research was conducted to determine if VDOT's specification is appropriate. Since this project was concerned with fluorescent orange construction and maintenance signs, 232 work zones in Virginia for the 1999 construction season were identified and inventoried. From these sites, 1,865 signs were investigated. The information collected included position, offset, height, shape and dimensions, whether tilted forward or back, rotation and twist, and the number of approach lanes facing the sign. This information was compiled in a spreadsheet, and a vector-based model was developed to determine the entrance, observation, rotation, and orientation angles for each sign. The results indicated that VDOT's 50-deg entrance angle requirement is not appropriate for fluorescent orange construction and maintenance signs. However, the results also indicated that more emphasis should be placed on observation angle requirements than on entrance angle requirements. Every motorist on the approach to a sign will have an observation angle of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and possibly 2.0 deg depending on the type of vehicle being driven. The study recommends that VDOT specify a 40-deg entrance angle and a 1.0-deg observation angle for prismatic fluorescent orange work zone signs. In addition, the study recommends that the specification include requirements for orientation and rotation angles.
