Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature of the South To give an introduction to the study of Literature as it has developed in the South leading to the fur ther study of the works of southern authors, is the purpose of this book. Literature and history go hand in hand, for, when all is said, the literature of a people is the expression of their life. T o understand Literature, then, we must understand its source. I have endeavored to indicate the characteristic of the succeeding periods of literary development, and to trace the influence of historical events upon the life and consequent expression of the people of the South. It has, of course, been impossible to discuss all southern writers. Only the more representative are treated with any fulness, and many names have been necessarily omitted. Thus, also, the lists given of writers and their works are representative and not exhaustive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American Authors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Authors: A Hand-Book of American Literature From Early Colonial to Living Writers To prepare a text-book of American literature is a difficult task. It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Every compiler of a work of this kind is subject to this criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Writers, Vol. 2: Biographical and Critical Studies The death of Prof. Baskervill, September 6, 1899, cut short a career that had already accomplished much and promised more. His technical scholarship was recognized by his colleagues in English throughout the United States; his teaching quality attested by students who had been resorting to him in increasing numbers for more than twenty years; his power to please as well as instruct the general public evidenced by numerous calls to lecture at Chautauqua, in Colorado, at Monteagle, and elsewhere; and he was just finding his widest audience through his literary sketches and studies, and awakening in good judges the conviction that he was to be the historian of the intellectual movement called Southern Literature. William Malone Baskervill, son of Rev. John Baskervill and his wife, Elizabeth Malone, was born in Fayette County, Tenn., April 1, 1850. Book The South in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The South in Prose and Poetry Classic Reprint written by Henry M. Gill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in Prose and Poetry For a long time the literature of the South was neglected, or, perhaps, it is nearer the truth to say that it was ignored. Thomas Nelson Page, in a speech some years ago, stated that the rest of the world looked upon the South as a section of the United States without a literature, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, an authority throughout the world, published an arraignment far more scathing than this. We of the South have no one to blame for this condition of affairs but ourselves. It is only natural that, if we did not seem to place a proper value upon our own writers, no other section was going to herald their fame except where the overwhelming force of genius compelled it. We can but take the form of the mold in which we are cast. Our range of vision is limited by our horizon, and unless that horizon is lifted our field of vision will always remain the same. To those whose knowledge of American literature has been acquired merely from text-books written by men who have given scant space to the authors of the South, it is, in spite of its truth, an astonishing fact that Simms ranks only second to Hawthorne; that Poe surpasses all the other of our poets; that Calhoun was our most profound logician, and Maury the greatest American scientist of his day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Literary Messenger: 1834-1864 The long life of The Southern Literary M essen ger, the honorable position which it attained and the salutary influence it exerted, not only upon Southern but American Literature, entitled it, in the estimation of many of its friends, to a fair yet a loving commemoration. It was repeatedly suggested to the author that he ought to prepare such a tribute, because he had owned and edited the dear old Magazine for more than four years and was also familiar with the rest of its long and honorable career. Book The Literature of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literature of the South Classic Reprint written by Montrose Jonas Moses and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the South It is to be hoped that the following studies will emphasize this close contact of letters with the life of the South. The aim has been throughout, however, to escape the' stigma of sectionalism. The South, per se, retains its individuality - but its significance, as part of the nation, should have a wider under standing. For it will be found that the South has contributed to American literature, both by example and by accomplishment; that it has been original, even though much of its writing is imitative. The literature of the South is the literature of a people, and those people - after an evolution from the aristo crat to the democrat, taken in a wider sense - are themselves Americans as well as Southerners. The bibliographies contained in the Appendix will bespeak my indebtedness to the many sources of an historical and social nature. It is a pleasure here to express my deep appreciation of the unfailing courtesy given to me by the authorities of Columbia University Library, who have placed at my disposal every facility; in especial, I would thank Mr. Frederic W. Erb, whose personal interest and watchfulness have done much to enrich my bibliographies. To the St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library I also wish to extend my grateful acknowledgment.
