Book excerpt: Translated from the Danish by Walter Lowrie, David Swenson, and Alexander Dru The Danish philosopher Kierkegaard is one of the master thinkers of the modern age, a defining influence on existentialism and on twentieth-century theology, and this brilliantly tailored selection from his vast and varied writings--made by the great English poet W.H Auden--is a perfect introduction to his work. Download or read book Living Thinking Looking written by Siri Hustvedt and published by Picador. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internationally acclaimed novelist Siri Hustvedt has also produced a growing body of nonfiction. She has published a book of essays on painting (Mysteries of the Rectangle) as well as an interdisciplinary investigation of a neurological disorder (The Shaking Woman or A History of My Nerves). She has given lectures on artists and theories of art at the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 2011, she delivered the thirty-ninth annual Freud Lecture in Vienna. Living, Thinking, Looking brings together thirty-two essays written between 2006 and 2011, in which the author culls insights from philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, psychoanalysis, and literature. The book is divided into three sections: the essays in Living draw directly from Hustvedt's life; those in Thinking explore memory, emotion, and the imagination; and the pieces in Looking are about visual art. And yet, the same questions recur throughout the collection. How do we see, remember, and feel? How do we interact with other people? What does it mean to sleep, dream, and speak? What is "the self"? Hustvedt's unique synthesis of knowledge from many fields reinvigorates the much-needed dialogue between the humanities and the sciences as it deepens our understanding of an age-old riddle: What does it mean to be human?
Download or read book Living Thought written by Roberto Esposito and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of contemporary Italian thinkers, what Roberto Esposito refers to as Italian Theory, is attracting increasing attention around the world. This book explores the reasons for its growing popularity, its distinguishing traits, and why people are turning to these authors for answers to real-world issues and problems. The approach he takes, in line with the keen historical consciousness of Italian thinkers themselves, is a historical one. He offers insights into the great "unphilosophical" philosophers of life—poets, painters, politicians and revolutionaries, film-makers and literary critics—who have made Italian thought, from its beginnings, an "impure" thought. People like Machiavelli, Croce, Gentile, and Gramsci were all compelled to fulfill important political roles in the societies of their times. No wonder they felt that the abstract vocabulary and concepts of pure philosophy were inadequate to express themselves. Similarly, artists such as Dante, Leonardo Da Vinci, Leopardi, or Pasolini all had to turn to other disciplines outside philosophy in order to discuss and grapple with the messy, constantly changing realities of their lives. For this very reason, says Esposito, because Italian thinkers have always been deeply engaged with the concrete reality of life (rather than closed up in the introspective pursuits of traditional continental philosophy) and because they have looked for the answers of today in the origins of their own historical roots, Italian theory is a "living thought." Hence the relevance or actuality that it holds for us today. Continuing in this tradition, the work of Roberto Esposito is distinguished by its interdisciplinary breadth. In this book, he passes effortlessly from literary criticism to art history, through political history and philosophy, in an expository style that welcomes non-philosophers to engage in the most pressing problems of our times. As in all his works, Esposito is inclusive rather than exclusive; in being so, he celebrates the affirmative potency of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy kept one book invariably on his desk, read and reread it to his family, and recommended it to all his friends: a compendium of wise thoughts gathered over the course of a decade from his wide-ranging readings in philosophy and religion, and from his own spiritual meditations. It was banned under the Communists, and only one volume, A Calendar of Wisdom, drawn largely from the writings of other famous thinkers, has been published before in English. Wise Thoughts For Every Day is the volume comprising Tolstoy’s own most essential ideas about spirituality and what it is to live a good life. Designed by Tolstoy to be a cycle of daily readings, this book offers thoughts and aphorisms for every day according to a succession of themes repeated each month—such as God, the soul, desire, our passions, humility, inequality, evil, truth, happiness, prayer, and the blessings of love. At once challenging, comforting, and inspiring, this is a spiritual treasure trove and a book of great human warmth.

Download or read book The Book of ABE written by Alphonso McGriff and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These writings represent a compilation of poetry, thoughts, perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints which are based on where my consciousness was at the time of the writings, and my own limited understanding of things, my truth.I take pride in being able to give an explanation for whatever I claim to believe or understand. I do not just parrot people who are popular. My explanation does not always bring understanding to others; however, I do develop my own understanding from within. I also take pride in my ability to embrace a change in perspective on the spot if I come into a new understanding that makes more sense . . . to me. As a result, these perspectives can change at any time depending on my continued personal growth and evolution as a Divine Universal Human Becoming. Finally, I have no problem with saying "I don't know."There are a wide range of emotions represented in these writings including, anger, fear, disappointment, joy, pain, and peace. I wanted to share these writings because I think it's important for people to know we all go through many of the same experiences and emotions during our personal evolutionary process. Though some of my perspectives may be unpopular, I welcome the opportunity to answer questions about what my thought process was during the various stages of my writings. The main reason I put this book together is to add my perspective to the many perspectives already out there. I did not feel that my perspective was being heard or properly represented. I also share these writings because for most of my life I have had problems sharing my perspective about issues without people who are extremely protective of their beliefs, becoming emotional and verbally aggressive. I understand those who protect their beliefs; however, protecting beliefs and preventing others from hearing a different perspective are two different things. Those who become emotional and protective of their beliefs should just move away from the conversation, rather than turn the conversation into a toxic experience. I have also come to realize that those who are secure and comfortable with what they believe and understand have no problem with hearing other perspectives. My goal with this book is to offer my perspective. People can take it or leave it alone. I have learned personal growth can only take place within an open consciousness. If by reading this book, it opens your mind a little, I have been successful. There are also some things I have not explained or gone into detail about. This is done intentionally. For those of you who ask "What did he mean by this," I say to you "What does it mean to you?"If for some reason you take anything about this book and its contents personal, I suggest you ask yourself why, and then deal with that, rather than take the easy way out and blame me, the writer, for making you feel some kind of way.I am in the process of dealing with the thought methodology that says "You can't take anything in Life - personal . . . Life gon' do what it do', independent of how you feel about it. Either you gon' Live and Grow, or Live to Die Slow - you got two choices . . . deal wit' it, or leave it alone."When we are sharing information, we should never attack the person; however, we should feel very comfortable with challenging, questioning, and even attacking the thought, perspective, philosophy, and idea that person is presenting.Hate is an emotional poison that destroys our kidneys, cardiovascular system, and spirit. Just try living without these components. Ultimately, harboring hate is a self-inflicted punishment or a slow suicide. Let it go.Enemies are declared by people who are incapable of simply recognizing and accepting reality about a person, group of people, or situation. I don't have to declare anyone as the enemy. I just declare people as understood and act like I know.
Download or read book Living the Life Unexpected written by Jody Day and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The book to recommend to patients when they face coming to terms with unavoidable childlessness.' – British Medical Journal In Living the Life Unexpected, Jody Day addresses the experience of involuntary childlessness and provides a powerful, practical guide to help those negotiating a future without children come to terms with their grief; a grief that is only just beginning to be recognized by society. This friendly, practical, humorous and honest guide from one of the world’s most respected names in childless support offers compassion and understanding and shows how it’s possible to move towards a creative, happy, meaningful and fulfilling future – even if it’s not the one you had planned. Millions of people are now living a life without children, almost double that of a generation ago and the numbers are rising still. Although some are childfree by choice, many others are childless due to infertility or circumstance and are struggling to come to terms with their uncertain future. Although most people think that those without children either 'couldn't' or 'didn't want’ to be parents, the truth is much more complex. Jody Day was forty-four when she realized that her quest to be a mother was at an end. She presumed that she was through the toughest part, but over the next couple of years she was hit by waves of grief, despair and isolation. Eventually she found her way and in 2011 created Gateway Women, the global friendship and support network for childless women which has now helped almost two million people worldwide. This edition, previously titled Rocking the Life Unexpected, has been extensively revised and updated, with significant additional content and case studies from forty involuntarily childless people (mostly women) from around the world.
Download or read book The Year of Magical Thinking written by Joan Didion and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-02-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • From one of America’s iconic writers, a stunning book of electric honesty and passion that explores an intensely personal yet universal experience: a portrait of a marriage—and a life, in good times and bad—that will speak to anyone who has ever loved a husband or wife or child. Several days before Christmas 2003, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion saw their only daughter, Quintana, fall ill with what seemed at first flu, then pneumonia, then complete septic shock. She was put into an induced coma and placed on life support. Days later—the night before New Year’s Eve—the Dunnes were just sitting down to dinner after visiting the hospital when John Gregory Dunne suffered a massive and fatal coronary. In a second, this close, symbiotic partnership of forty years was over. Four weeks later, their daughter pulled through. Two months after that, arriving at LAX, she collapsed and underwent six hours of brain surgery at UCLA Medical Center to relieve a massive hematoma. This powerful book is Didion’ s attempt to make sense of the “weeks and then months that cut loose any fixed idea I ever had about death, about illness ... about marriage and children and memory ... about the shallowness of sanity, about life itself.
