Book Living Hope A Collection for Holy Week and Easter

Download or read book Living Hope A Collection for Holy Week and Easter written by Andy March and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I want to tell you the real story of Jesus the King and his crazy glory. He broke all the rules, didn't play by the book Want to know why? Well, let's take a look" In Living Hope: A Collection for Holy Week and Easter, Andy March invites us to take a fresh look at the events of Jesus and his followers' journey from the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, through to the devastation of Jesus' death on the cross, then to the unexpected joy and hope of that resurrection day. Through story and poetry, sermons and reflections, Living Hope will inspire, provoke, and give us a fresh understandingof the life-transforming power of Holy Week and Easter. May it lead us to a place of wonder and worship once more. "Fresh, creative, insightful and powerful meditations for Easter - grateful to this gifted writer for such a superb resource for personal or group study - I highly recommend this." Simon Ponsonby (Priest, Author, Teacher) From the Introduction ... Living Hope is not designed to be read front-to-back like a novel. See it more as something to be dipped into and enjoyed. Part 1 - Telling the Story A collection of monologues and sketches that seek to tell the familiar story in a new way, often from the perspective of the characters involved. These would be perfect for use in services and would work as stand-alone pieces. Part 2 - The Power of the Cross - Devotional Services for Good Friday Reflections (written from the perspectives of the characters involved) and prayers and interspersed with Bible readings from the Passion narratives in the Gospels. These were written for "Last Hour" services, taking place at 2pm on Good Friday. The Bible readings are part of the text to help you in your own devotions. Part 3 - Proclaiming Hope - The Message of Holy Week and Easter Sermons I have preached over the years on Gospel passages on the Passion (the period between Palm Sunday and Good Friday) and Resurrection of Jesus. These have been preached on ordinary Sundays during Lent and Easter season as well as Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Some are interspersed with the monologues that you will find elsewhere in the book. Part 4 - Easter for All Ages These are some of the all age talks I've written for our services on Easter Sunday. Hopefully these will inspire and help those who have the wonderful but challenging task of leading services and are looking for something fresh to say. Part 5 - Responding to Hope Poetry, which often forms my personal expression of worship in this season. My greatest challenge as a "professional Christian" is that I can be so focused on communicating the Good News to others that I fail to appreciate its meaning for myself. These poems flow from those times when I stop, reflect and worship. Part 6 - Journeying in Hope A four-week devotional for Holy Week and Easter that starts on Palm Sunday, containing Bible verses I selected and reflections I wrote on Twitter. You may want to use this to accompany your own devotions, perhaps at the end of the day.

Book excerpt: "Dayspring, my dictionary tells me, is an archaic word meaning 'dawn.' But I have chosen Daysprings as the title for this collection of meditations for the several meanings in the ancient word and its components. I hope these brief reflections shed new light on old, familiar passages and illuminate the way through new ones. I also hope these pieces will prove to be springboards to new and creative meditation for readers, pastors, and preachers, and that they will find within these pieces an extra buoyancy for each day. Lastly, I hope these thoughts will flow like fresh, living waters through days of fast and feast, bringing refreshment. --from the Preface In his accompanying volume to Brightest and Best: A Companion to the Lesser Feasts and Fasts, Sam Portaro offers meditations for each of the weekdays for the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. Following the lectionary texts for each day, he focuses on the seasonal themes of incarnation, manifestation, suffering, redemption, and resurrection, showing how the eternal truths of the gospel shed light on the ordinary and extraordinary events of our lives. Solidly grounded in the prayers and scriptures of these seasonal liturgies, Portaro's meditations bring fresh and powerful--sometimes pointed--insights for those who follow the daily readings and prayers of these days of the weeks in the church year as found in Lesser Feasts and Fasts.

Book excerpt: In this book of meditations Father Raniero Cantalamessa reflects on Christ's passion, death, and resurrection. First presented as a lenten retreat in Rome, together with the Good Friday homily in St. Peter's Basilica, the result is a rich and multifaceted exploration of this central mystery of the Christian faith. Christ's journey to Easter is such an immensely rich source that homilists, liturgists and believers who wants to plumb its depths know the challenge is not about lack of content, but rather where to begin. Like an experienced guide who knows the territory and its many paths, Father Cantalamessa helps readers reach the spiritual center. His varying points of departure become stirring reflections on Easter. They culminate in a powerful meditation on the Servant Song in the light of the Passion narratives 'and the message of the victorious Christ. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap, is past professor of the history of Christian origins at the Catholic University of Milan and a past member of the International Theological Commission. He is preacher to the papal household and author of numerous books.

Book Your Hearts Will Rejoice

Download or read book Your Hearts Will Rejoice written by Ludolf (von Sachsen) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vita Christi, a spiritual classic of the fourteenth century by the Carthusian Ludolph of Saxony, was an early and extremely comprehensive book of meditations on the events recorded in the gospels. A popular and influential book for centuries, it was instrumental in the conversion of Ignatius Loyola, and Teresa of Avila directed that every convent of her reform include "the Carthusian" in its library. This volume, which consists of excerpts from the full Vita Christi (forthcoming from Cistercian Publications), presents Ludolph's meditations on the resurrection and the appearances of the risen Christ, concluding with Pentecost. Although shelves of books are dedicated to Christ's passion, comparatively little spiritual reading for the Easter Season exists. This book is intended to help fill that lacuna and to introduce readers to this classic text.

Book A Letter from Joseph

Download or read book A Letter from Joseph written by Benjamin R. Doolittle and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1998, I began to preach at East Pearl Street Methodist Church. I came to East Pearl fresh off the plane from a year as a missionary doctor to India and Honduras. I had delivered babies, sutured machete wounds, and even contracted malaria during a cholera epidemic. With my head full of stories and my heart on fire, I returned to Yale for residency. When I heard East Pearl needed a Minister, I leapt at the chance. We are an urban church in a struggling neighborhood. The city's great challenges are our shared ministry: poverty, housing, illness, imprisonment, HIV, psychiatric problems. Despite a gouty boiler, and a wheezy organ (masterfully coddled by our long-time organist Willis Copeland), we thrive with a tireless hope. As an urban pastor and a young doctor, this sermon collection is my attempt to stoke the fires of hope in a world wired with technology and anxiety. For those wrestling with their faith, doubting their role in the world, or just curious about Christianity, I believe these meditations offer hope and perspective for our modern times.

Book From Dry Bones to Living Hope

Download or read book From Dry Bones to Living Hope written by Missy Buchanan and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the shadow side of aging is a reality, author Missy Buchanan brings spiritual light and nourishment to people in the later years of life. Older adults struggle with chronic pain and diminished physical abilities. They contend with losses that pile up like the dry bones in the prophet Ezekiel's vision—the loss of loved ones and friends, the loss of their home and belongings, the loss of independence, and the loss of purpose. In a culture that values youth more than age, older adults often feel forgotten and without purpose. Each chapter of From Dry Bones to Living Hope opens with an intimate, prayerful lament to God from the perspective of the older adult who longs for spiritual renewal and purpose. The authentic voice of lament establishes credibility with older readers who yearn for others to empathize with their struggles. The second part of each chapter, "Cultivating Hope," guides them to God's perspective on aging and specific actions they can take that lead to hope and joy.

Book excerpt: Learn how to face and overcome the fears we feel about loneliness, illness, financial insecurity, disappointing others, failure, insignificance, and aging “A thoughtful, literate, faith-filled guide to reclaiming our minds and our lives.”—John Ortberg, senior pastor of Menlo Church and author of I’d Like You More If You Were More Like Me You’d be hard-pressed to overstate the extent to which fear, anxiety, and worry permeate our lives today. Fear wreaks havoc on our relationships and communities. It leads us into making bad decisions. It holds us back from the very pursuits that promise fulfillment and joy. As the senior pastor of a large, diverse church in America’s heartland, Adam Hamilton has seen the cost of fear up close. When he surveyed his congregation on how fear affects them, 2,400 people responded—and what they said was eye-opening. Eighty percent admitted to living with moderate or significant levels of fear. Unafraid is Hamilton's insightful and impassioned response. Drawing on recent research, inspiring real-life examples, and fresh biblical insight, Hamilton uses a mixture of facts and faith to help readers understand and counter fears related to such outsize perils as death and illness, as well as the everyday anxieties all of us encounter. He invites us to: Face our fears with a bias of hope Examine our fears in light of the facts Attack our anxieties with action Release our cares to God Writing with generosity and intelligence, Hamilton shows how believer and unbeliever alike can develop sustaining spiritual practices and embrace Jesus’s recurring counsel: “Do not be afraid.” For anyone struggling with fear or wondering how families and communities can thrive in troubled times, Unafraid offers an informed and inspiring message full of practical solutions.
