Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Christian Atonement The following Manual is not presented to the public, because the subjects it discusses are not ably set forth by men of deep theological science and ardent piety, but because most of the works published are found in large volumes of systems of theology, and are, therefore, not so accessible to, and sought for by, the Christian public. Book The Atonement and the Modern Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Atonement and the Modern Mind Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement and the Modern Mind From two sources. Either the mind is pre occupied with a conception of the world which, whether men are conscious of it or not, forecloses all the questions which are raised by any doctrine of atonement, and makes them unmeaning; or it labours under some misconception as to what the New Tes tament actually teaches. Broadly speaking, the first of these conditions is considered in the first two chapters, and the second in the last. The title Tko Atonement and tko Modern Mind - might seem to promise a treatise, or even an elaborate system of theol ogy; but though it would cover a work of vastly larger scope than the present, it is not inappropriate to'any attempt, however humble, to help the mind in which we all live and move to reach a sympathetic comprehension of the central truth in the Christian religion. The purpose of the writer is evangelic, what ever may be said oi his method; it is to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Atonement The problem discussed in the f ollow ing pages is confessedly one of the deep est and most difficult problems related to the Christian faith and life Any man Who essays to set it forth With an easy wave of the hand and With con fident forms of speech proves himself, by the token of his own f Olly, inadequate to its treatment. The greatest of the apostles said that without controversy the mystery of godliness was vast; and even if he used mystery in a sense dif ferent from our own, and had in mind a doctrine other than the atonement, both his noun and his intention could readily be used in this discussion. Book Eternal Atonement Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eternal Atonement Dr. Hitchcock published little in his life-time. His mind was so active, and he was so constantly giving out fresh thoughts to stimulate others, that he left himself little space to revise and elaborate for the press. Be sides, his power was in himself quite as much as in his words. His own personality was so marked, that his presence in the pulpit or the lecture-room, at once commanded attention, and gave emphasis to what he uttered. That personal magnetism cannot be recalled though it remains to all who knew him a most vivid and precious memory. But now that he is gone, we can only read these silent pages, supplying, as best we may, the flashing eye and the thrilling voice. Book Ethics and Atonement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ethics and Atonement Classic Reprint written by W. F. Lofthouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Atonement The attempt to add to the many books that deal with the Atonement needs some excuse. Although, however, the subject has been so widely discussed, there is one side from which it has not often been approached, the side of those who arc not greatly concerned with theology, but arc keenly interested in morals and in life. Yet it is from this side that most people come to the consideration of the Atonement. Hence questions are often asked which treatises on the Atonement do not appear to answer, and the Atonement itself, instead of being the illuminating centre of theology, becomes a stumbling-block in the way of any real acceptance of religion. In the following pages I have endeavoured to maintain that the doctrine of the Atonement is not an artificial theorem or an inexplicable or unethical dogma, but that it has its roots in the foundations of all human life, and is really the highest expression of the law of all moral and social progress; and that ethics itself is of little use, as a practical science, unless completed by the Atonement. I have to thank Professor Palmer of Harvard University, the Rev. J. S. Lidgctt, M.A., Warden of the Bermondsey Settlement, and my colleague, Dr J. G. Tasker, for valuable advice in connexion with large portions of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Atonement and the Death of Christ

Download or read book Atonement and the Death of Christ written by William Lane Craig and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his death on the cross, Christ atoned for sin and so reconciled people to God. New Testament authors drew upon a range of metaphors and motifs to describe this salvific act, and down through history Christian thinkers have tried to articulate various theories to explain the atonement. While Christ's sacrifice serves as a central tenet of the Christian faith, the mechanism of atonement--exactly how Christ effects our salvation--remains controversial and ambiguous to many Christians. In Atonement and the Death of Christ, William Lane Craig conducts an interdisciplinary investigation of this crucial Christian doctrine, drawing upon Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and analytic philosophy. The study unfolds in three discrete parts: Craig first explores the biblical basis of atonement and unfolds the wide variety of motifs used to characterize this doctrine. Craig then highlights some of the principal alternative theories of the atonement offered by great Christian thinkers of the premodern era. Lastly, Craig's exploration delves into a constructive and innovative engagement with philosophy of law, which allows an understanding of atonement that moves beyond mystery and into the coherent mechanism of penal substitution. Along the way, Craig enters into conversation with contemporary systematic theories of atonement as he seeks to establish a position that is scripturally faithful and philosophically sound. The result is a multifaceted perspective that upholds the suffering of Christ as a substitutionary, representational, and redemptive act that satisfies divine justice. In addition, this carefully reasoned approach addresses the rich tapestry of Old Testament imagery upon which the first Christians drew to explain how the sinless Christ saved his people from the guilt of their sins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atoning Sacrifice: A Display of Love Not of Wrath Even to discuss the subject of atonement is at the present, putting to hazard a man's good name, if not his standing in the church. If he departs from the beaten path, the cry of wanderer is raised. If he refuses to use old names and old forms of expression, he is in danger of being thought heretical. Scarcely can he venture even to discuss minor points relative to the subject, without finding some one to cry out against him. This is nafon tunate in regard to discovering what is true, and discour aging to those who incline to pursue investigations of this nature. Still there are minds deeply enough engaged in this great cause, to venture upon the pursuit of what is scriptural, and upon the rejection of what philosophy has added to the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement: Or Human Nature and Redemption The Jewish nation had fallen into a condition of wide spread degeneracy when John the Baptist appeared as the last and greatest herald of the Redeemer. An earlier prophet had said of him: The voice of him that crieth in the wilder ness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God (isa. 40: At the time of his appearance all classes of the people had forsaken the right ways of the Lord, and were heedless of His commands. Their position as a kingdom had been lost, and they were tributary to the Roman power. The high-priesthood was held by men who were filled with worldly ambition and love of gain rather than a sincere desire to administer God's righteous law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine of the Atonement, as Taught by Christ Himself: Or the Sayings of Jesus on the Atonement, Exegetically Expounded and Classified My task in this work has been simply to determine, by strict exegetical investigation, the import of Christ's words, and to reproduce His thoughts by the exact interpretation of lan guage. I have no other desire than to ascertain what He did say, and to abide by it 3 and the principle on which alone it is safe to carry on investigations into doctrine on any point, is, I am fully persuaded, to go to the Scriptures, not for the starting point of thought alone, but for the substance of thought as well, or for the rounded and concrete development of the doc trine in all its elements: and these will be found in Christ's sayings, if we but patiently investigate them. It is not, then, to the Christian consciousness that I appeal with some modern teachers, nor to Christian feeling and Christian reason with others, but to the sayings of the Great Teacher, and of His commissioned servants, employed as His organs of revelation to the Church of all time.
