This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Saints and Several Lectures and Sermons In this, our second book, we cheerfully offer to our brethren and children of the Holy Orthodox Church in the English-speaking world the Lives of the Saints, together with some lectures and a few of our sermons, mindful of the command of our Master, who said: Freely ye have received, freely give. We have no comments to make; let the facts in the histories of the lives of holy men and women speak for themselves; we only repeat that, the Spirit breatheth where He will. Let our lectures and sermons likewise speak for them selves, as they are strictly founded upon Holy Scripture and the writings of the Holy Fathers of the Church in her early days. Book Lives of the English Saints

Download or read book Lives of the English Saints written by John Henry Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the English Saints: St. Aelred, Abbot of Rievaux Saints, because the view which we have of them is in all cases coloured by the reverence of the Christian world, and yet it is by no means falsified. It is history with the perpetual interpretation of Christendom the mind of the Church acting upon facts in the life of one of her children. It may be quite true that in many instances false miracles or actions which may be proved never to have taken place, may have been ascribed to them. All unknown monk in some obscure monastery may have written a life of a Saint, merely putting together all the traditions which remained of him, without caring to separate the true from the false but still the result of the whole may be true and the general aspect in which Christendom views the Saint may be the right one, though some particular stories may be false. How few in many instances are the facts known about some of the Saints in the middle ages. Their parentage is often forgotten, and the history of their early years unknown or perhaps the names of their parents are preserved with the vague and suspi cions addition that they were of very noble birth. Some few great deeds are on record, but the internal struggles which led to them are all forgotten all at once they appear before us as perfect Saints, as if no discipline had been required to form them. We are left to eke out the scanty materials of their lives with what we know must have happened, from the character of the times and from the manners of the age. And yet perhaps we should hardly regret this the picture of a Saint with the aureole round his head and the meek expression of joy on his features, may be unlike what he was in his lifetime, and yet it may be the more like what he is in heaven now. And after all, if we had come close to him, a real living Saint, should we have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in the Lives of the Saints Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Lives of the Saints Classic Reprint written by Edward Hutton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Lives of the Saints Action of the mind on itself has ever been the tendency of the scientific inquirer. If such attempts have any real value, it is in the evidence they bring forward of our profound ignorance of the most simple phenomena of the interior and unseen life - that child sleep ing so peacefully in most of us, only occasion ally stirring in the dreams that we learn in time to disregard. And unlike the aesthetic critic it is impossible for us to ignore the reality of these experiences of the Saints. For they have no intrinsic beauty, being really but a kind of profound logic following on that postulate Let it be granted that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. In the ex periences of St. Teresa or St. John of the Cross there is nothing that is of any pos sible value if the actual experiences told so coldly never really happened. And indeed, when we inquire more closely into the scienceof mysticism, we find scarcely beauty at all, only a kind of tragedy whose end we cannot see - a tragedy that is really after all only a comedy, so that it should end happily. And mysticism, regarded rightly not as the hysteri cal profession of those who in contemplating some bleeding Christ have lost that temper ance and sanity which it is the profound busi ness of criticism to preserve, but regarded as the hard and crystallized logic of some mighty argument, is really not a beautiful thing at all, in that almost its first requirement is a denial of life, a dislike and contempt for the beauty of the world. Entirely without humour, it has at least to this extent in uenced every school of Christian thought in that Christianity gener ally denies humour to God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Saints, Vol. 2: With a Practical Instruction on the Life of Each Saint, for Every Day in Year Come to his assistance, ye Saints of God, come forth to meet him, ye Angels of the Lord, receiving his soul, offer it to the Most High, he calmly closed his eyes and gave up his soul, filled with so many merits, into the hand of God, in the-year 1221, the soth of his age. He left to posterity, not only the holy Order which he founded, but the most noble example of virtue. His heart was filled with the love of God; hence he endeavored most assiduously to prevent others from offending the Divine Majesty and to move Sinners to repentance. Frequently he passed the whole night in prayer and in chastising his body, of fering it to God for the conversion of Sinners, saying that he would willingly give every drop of his blood, if by it he were able to prevent a Single sin, or to convert a Sinner. It was his wish to suffer and to give his life for the love of Christ. Humil ity made him three times refuse a bishopric. He desired noth ing but to work for the salvation of souls, to suffer and be de Spised. Towards himself he was extremely severe; he con stantly wore a rough hair-shirt, fastened around the loins with an iron chain, drawn so tightly, that it cut into the flesh. The steps of the altar or the bare boards were his bed. He scourged himself three times each night, first for his own' sins; secondly for the Sins of other men; and thirdly, for the souls in purgai tory. His life was, besides, a continual fast. He never tasted meat; To live on alms and to aid the poor was all he desired. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Saints Happiness Together with the Several Steps Leading Thereunto

Download or read book The Saints Happiness Together with the Several Steps Leading Thereunto written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints' Happiness, Together With the Several Steps Leading Thereunto: Delivered in Divers Lectures on the Beatitudes; Being Part of Christ's Sermon on the Mount, Contained in the Fifth of Matthew IT will probably by most readers be deemed sufficient, by way of introduction to one of the numerous works of this author, to reproduce the brief notice' of him which was prefixed by the late Rev James Sherman to his edition of his Exposition of Hosea - T. S. IT is deeply to be lamented that no life was given to the church of this excellent minister of Christ; concerning whom Mr Baxter says, If all the Episcopalians had been like Archbishop Usher, all the Presbyterians like Mr Stephen Marshall, and all the Independents like Mr Jeremiah Burroughs, the breaches of the church would soon have been healed.' From the few scattered notices of him in different authors, and chiefly from those of his enemies, we learn that he was born in 1599. He studied and took his degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge; after which he became colleague with the Rev. Edmund Calamy, at Bury St Edmund's. In the year 1631 he became rector of Tivetshall, in the county of Norfolk; but upon the publication of Bishop Wren's Articles and Injunctions, in 1636, he was suspended and deprived of his living. The Earl of Warwick, who was the friend and patron of the persecuted ministers, and one of their constant hearers, gave him an asylum in his house, till the fire of persecution, which raged so strongly against him, obliged him to fly to Holland. He was chosen assistant minister to the church at Rotterdam, of which the Rev. William Bridge was pastor. The violence of party strife at that period raised against him many accusations for leaving his country, but his vindication of himself and his conduct in retiring to Rotterdam is so ample and circumstantial, and withal written in so meek and humble a spirit, as to raise in the reader a high estimation of his veracity and piety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks to the Saints The missionary who leaves his home in Zion goes forth with the idea that he is to warn the sinner and convert the unbeliever rather than to instruct the members of the church in relation to their duties. Hence, the sermons preached and the tracts distributed by the traveling elders deal primarily with the first principles of the Gospel. We are, however, coming to realize that the mission fields are the nurseries of Zion. Those who are appointed by the authority of the Holy Priesthood to preside over them are expected, therefore, to use all dili gence in ministering to the members as well as in persuading the unbelievers. Among the Syrian bishops present, the first in dignity was the orthodox Eustathius, who either was, or was on the point of being made, patriarch of Antioch, the capital of Syria, the metropolis of the Eastern Church, then called the city of God.
