Excerpt from book: But this, as well as the Cheshire property, appears to have parsed, early in the eighteenth century, into the family of Isherwood, of Bolton- le-Moors, in Lancashire, by a marriage with the niece of the regicide, the heiress of the Bradshaw family. MEMOIR OF THOMAS HARRISON. Thomas Harrison, whose courageous defence of his conduct on his trial, and undaunted endurance of his last sufferings, were not less remarkable than the fanatical extravagances of his life, was the son of a grazier, near Newcastle under Line, according to some writers; of a butcher, near Nantwich, in Cheshire, according to Clarendon. The former is the more probable account. In the Register of Newcastle under Lyne is an entry of Thomas Harrisc n, baptized July 16. 1606. And tradition points out an old house in the Lower Street of that town as having belonged to the regicide. It is certain that he came to London young, and was placed under an attorney in Clifford's Inn, of the name of Hoselker; which kind of education, says Clarendon, introduces men into the language and practice of business; and if it be not resisted by the great ingenuity (ingenuousness) of the person, inclines young men to more pride than any other kind of breeding, and disposes them to be pragmatical and insolent, though they havethe skill to conceal it from their masters, except they find them (as they are too often) inclined to cherish it. When the students of the Inns of Court, infected with the insubordinate spirit of the times, formed themselves into companies at the commencement of the civil war, Harrison was among the number; and served under Sir Philip Stapylton in the body guard of the General the Earl of Essex. Clarendon says he first obtained the office of a Cornet; and got up, by diligence and sobriety, to the s...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casual stargazers are familiar with many classical figures and asterisms composed of bright stars (e.g., Orion and the Plough), but this book reveals not just the constellations of today but those of yesteryear. The history of the human identification of constellations among the stars is explored through the stories of some influential celestial cartographers whose works determined whether new inventions survived. The history of how the modern set of 88 constellations was defined by the professional astronomy community is recounted, explaining how the constellations described in the book became permanently “extinct.” Dr. Barentine addresses why some figures were tried and discarded, and also directs observers to how those figures can still be picked out on a clear night if one knows where to look. These lost constellations are described in great detail using historical references, enabling observers to rediscover them on their own surveys of the sky. Treatment of the obsolete constellations as extant features of the night sky adds a new dimension to stargazing that merges history with the accessibility and immediacy of the night sky.

Book A History of the French in London

Download or read book A History of the French in London written by Debra Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines, for the first time, the history of the social, cultural, political and economic presence of the French in London, and explores the multiple ways in which this presence has contributed to the life of the city. The capital has often provided a place of refuge, from the Huguenots in the 17th century, through the period of the French Revolution, to various exile communities during the 19th century, and on to the Free French in the Second World War.It also considers the generation of French citizens who settled in post-war London, and goes on to provide insights into the contemporary French presence by assessing the motives and lives of French people seeking new opportunities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyses the impact that the French have had historically, and continue to have, on London life in the arts, gastronomy, business, industry and education, manifest in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political via the educational, to the commercial and creative industries.
