Book The Lives of Annibale Agostino Carracci

Download or read book The Lives of Annibale Agostino Carracci written by Giovanni Pietro Bellori and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decisive role of the Carracci in seventeenth-century art was as apparent to their contemporaries as it is now, in our own time. Annibale Carracci ranks directly after Caravaggio as the most important Italian painter of the Baroque era. He established the tradition of Roman baroque classicism so firmly that it flourished in an unbroken line--Carracci to Albani to Sacchi to Maratta--for more than a century. Generation after generation of artists came to Rome to study his frescoes in the Farnese Gallery, and his influence in the development of French neo-classicism is still being explored. The classical concept of the "composed landscape," largely his invention, was to prove of central importance, first to Poussin and later to Cezanne. The translation, the first into English, is from Bellori's Vite de' Pittori, Scultori ed Architetti Moderni published in Rome in 1672. A friend of Poussin, Bellori was librarian to Queen Christina of Sweden. Pope Clement X recognized his many works on ancient art (still of value today) by making him Antiquarian of Rome. Unlike many earlier and later art historians, Bellori did not attempt to write about all the artists of a given area or epoch, but selected only those he considered significant. Schlosser called him "the most important historian of art not just of Rome but of all Italy, indeed of Europe, in the seventeenth century."

  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Caravaggio written by Helen Langdon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all Italian painters, Caravaggio (c. 1565-1609) speaks most intensely to the modern world. His early works suggest a fascination with his own youth and sexuality and the trancience of love and beauty his later religious art speaks of violence, passion, solitude and death. Ugly, almost brutal-looking, Caravaggio was constantly embroiled in fights and entangled with the law; the prototype anti-social artist, he moved between the worlds of powerful patrons and the street life of boys and prostitutes. Helen Langdon uncovers his progress from childhood in plague-ridden Milan to wild success in Rome, and eventual exile and persecution in the South, and sets his work against the political, intellectual and spiritual movements of the day. Fully illustrated, her dramatic portrait shows Carravigio's life to be as sensational and enigmatic as his powerful and enduring art.

Book An Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology 2 Volumes

Download or read book An Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology 2 Volumes written by Nancy T. De Grummond and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996-11-25 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean and the Etruscans and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in other parts of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Unlike recent studies that focus on the science of excavating, this book also considers archaeological study in the Middle Age, the Renaissance, and the modern era. It includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated during the Renaissance and the 17th century as well as works that were known in the Middle Ages. All of the entries include some historical content. Most combine historical information with descriptive material that identifies and explains the topic, opinions of archaeologists past and present, and references to achievements in archaeological scholarship. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline--the history of archaeology--this volume will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, classics, history, topography, art history, and architectural history.

Book The Invention of Annibale Carracci

Download or read book The Invention of Annibale Carracci written by Clare Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
