Eighty-three percent of institutions with online offerings anticipate their online enrollment will continue to increase over the next year. Currently, online nursing programs exist for undergraduate, RN-BSN, refresher courses, graduate, and doctoral programs. Active learning strategies such as group learning are increasingly being utilized in nursing education. This research is a phenomenological qualitative study describing nursing students' experiences of group projects in the online learning environment. The data were collected by unstructured telephone interviews. Themes were extracted from the analyzed interviews. This study may assist in the development and facilitation of online group projects in the future.

Book excerpt: Recent trends in healthcare and an ever-increasing nursing shortage provide clear rationale for examining a broad array of issues related to educational delivery methods associated with professional nursing. Focused inquiry in regard to the student's lived experience within an alternative graduate educational program is necessary to determine why students select such programs over traditional options, factors they deem critical to their success, key descriptors of the learning experience, and the essence of meaning of that experience. This book is derived from an interpretive phenomenological study examining the lived experiences of 14 graduates of alternative graduate Masters level nursing programs. These participants were all recent graduates of 3 universities in the Western United States. All were enrolled in a graduate nursing program track using alternative methods of instructional delivery. Although this study was conducted in the Western United States, alternative instructional delivery is of worldwide interest and the information derived from examining these lived experiences may prove to be of benefit to individuals and universities elsewhere.

Book excerpt: One-fifth of Americans live in rural areas, and represent an increasingly diverse population; simultaneously, these regions have reduced access to physicians, placing greater emphasis on the social justice of health care, and the importance of nurse practitioners as primary providers. Due to their geographic isolation, securing additional training from graduate schools presents a challenge for nurses residing in such areas, meaning they may utilize distance education in achieving those goals. Synchronous-blended distance programs mix distance students, who attend virtually using telecommuting hardware and software, with traditional, in-seat students. Unfortunately, when blending virtual and physical classrooms, the distance student---held hostage by technological and two-dimensional shortcomings---is relegated to an Other. This experience of Being Flat People is a unique issue within distance education. While quantitative research suggests social and cognitive interaction is key to successful distance education, there is scant qualitative work examining learners' perceptions of distance experiences in synchronous-blended settings: classroom social status; cognitive presence; transactional distance; and emotional classroom connectedness. This dissertation is a transcendental phenomenological investigation of how eight graduate nursing students perceived their experiences as distance students in synchronous-blended learning environments. It employs a philosophical lens of normative belonging in evaluating the status of distance students in these classes, and the study reveals conflicting feelings about being "there, but not there," technological barriers, support systems, and the importance of independence. Finally, it presents a model, the Transactional Continuum, as a next step for understanding and improving the experiences of distance students in medical education and beyond.

This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.

Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States.
