Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy This book is intended to supply information about the history of the Roman liturgy. The dogmatic side of the Mass is discussed by the Bishop of Newport in the same series.1 The title shows that it is a study of the Roman rite. It is only in the Roman (or Gallican) rite that the Eucharistic service can correctly be called Mass. The chapter about other liturgies and the frequent references to them throughout are meant only to put our Roman Mass in its proper perspective and to illustrate its elements by com parison. In spite of the risk of repetition, the clearest plan seemed to be to discuss first the origin and development of the Mass in general and then to go through the service as it stands now, adding notes to each prayer and ceremony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Mass, Vol. 1: The Eucharistic Sacrifice and the Roman Liturgy In the Catechism of Christian Doctrine which is in use in our Catholic schools, and which is familiar to all of us, after a dozen or so of questions and answers concerning the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, we come to the words: "Is the Holy Eucharist a Sacrament only? No ... it is also a Sacrifice"; words which, to a hyper-critical reader might almost suggest the thought that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass should be regarded as in a manner subsidiary to the Sacrament of our Lord's Body and Blood. This, of course, is by no means the case. In dealing with the Sacrament before touching on the doctrine of the Church regarding the Mass, the compilers of our catechism have wisely followed the example set by the Fathers of the Council of Trent, both in their preliminary discussions, and also in the final reduction of the conciliar decrees and canons. And indeed the reasons which led them to adopt this course are not far to seek. For, until the dogmas of the Real Presence and of Transubstantiation have been established, it is plainly impossible to make good the sacrificial character of the Eucharist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lay Folks Mass Book: Or the Manner of Hearing Mass, With Rubrics and Devotions for the People After all, the result has been that, not to mention other libraries at home and abroad, I have had to give up the hope of finding the missing mss. In the British Museum, the Bodleian, the University Library at Cambridge, the public libraries at Paris and Edinburgh, the Lambeth Library, the libraries at Durham, Lincoln, and other cathedrals in this country, at Ushaw and other Roman Catholic colleges, or in the libraries at Rouen and Caen, where, from the Norman origin of the treatise, it seemed not impossible that a copy may have found its way at the revolution among the Spoils of some Norman monastery or manor house. I did, however, succeed in getting to know of other mss., which, though later than the Museum ms, are interesting as Showing the changes that were afterwards introduced.
