Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance in 1960, Documents of the Baptismal Liturgy has been praised and used by scholars in understanding how the rite of baptism was celebrated through the centuries. This new edition retains the sources previously included and adds Eastern Christian texts from the great East Syrian Church Fathers, as well as selections from The Rite of the Assyrian Church of the East, the Syrian Orthodox Church, and the Maronite Rite. Additional Western texts include the famous Pentecost Homily attributed to Faustus of Riez, Letter 26 to Januarius from Pope Gregory I, and the Rite of Confirmation from the Pontifical of William Durandus. Instead of placing local councils together in one section, individual councils are now placed in their respective geographic locals. Bibliographical lists in a variety of languages have been added for each document studied or for each locale; and translations have often been replaced with more recent versions. The glossary and the introductions to each document make it accessible to the general, as well as the specialist, reader. Chapters are The Ante-Nicene Church," *Syria, Syro-Palestine, Antiochia, - *The Rite of the Assyrian Church of the East, - *The Armenian Rite, - *The Syriac-Maronite Rite, - *The Byzantine Rite, - *Egypt, - *Africa, - *Spain, - *Milan, - *Rome, - *Galican Documents, - and *The Sarum Rite. - E. Book Recovering the Evangelical Sacrament

Download or read book Recovering the Evangelical Sacrament written by Anthony R. Cross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of baptism continues to be of considerable interest--though it frequently appears within broader studies of sacraments, liturgy, worship, and ecumenical studies, and within confessional bounds: credobaptist or paedobaptist--yet it is rarely discussed by Evangelicals. This book, however, is neither an apologetic for credobaptism nor paedobaptism; rather Cross believes that, as practiced today, both forms are a departure from New Testament baptism, which, he maintains, was an integral part of becoming a Christian and part of the proclaimed gospel. He argues that the "one baptism" of Ephesians 4:5 is conversion-baptism and that the baptism referred to in the various New Testament strata refers to this "one baptism" (of Spirit and water). The study sets out the case for this interpretation and contends that in key passages "baptism" is an example of synecdoche. The case is then made for a sacramental interpretation of baptism from a thoroughgoing Evangelical perspective. Cross concludes with reflections on the necessity of baptismal reform and the relevance of a return to conversion-baptism for the contemporary church in a post-Christian, post-Christendom, mission setting.

Book The Baptismal Liturgy of Jerusalem

Download or read book The Baptismal Liturgy of Jerusalem written by Juliette Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jerusalem, under her bishop Cyril, the source of liturgical innovations in the fourth century or was she simply following trends which also affected the liturgy of neighbouring provinces? In assessing these two established propositions in relation to baptism, Juliette Day undertakes a careful comparative analysis of all the relevant sources for Palestine, Egypt and Syria, paying attention to the structure, content and theological narrative of the rites which they describe. The Mystagogical Catecheses, commonly attributed to Cyril of Jerusalem, are the key source in this discussion and this book demonstrates that they date from the episcopate of his successor John.

  • ISBN : 1433669056
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Believer s Baptism written by Thomas R. Schreiner and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book The Lord s Prayer in the Early Church

Download or read book The Lord s Prayer in the Early Church written by R. Hammerling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord s Prayer is arguably the most important prayer in Christianity. Still, exactly how the prayer developed in the life of the early church has remained hidden in ancient manuscripts. Hammerling s thorough and ground-breaking examination of these works reveals that early authors enthusiastically expounded upon its power and mystery, claiming that the prayer uttered by Christ belonged at the core of Christian ritual and beliefs. Many early church writers labeled it a "perfect summary of the gospel" and joyously referred to it as a pearl of great price and worth.

Book Spirit Baptism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harold D. Hunter
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2009-03-01
  • ISBN : 1725222191
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Spirit Baptism written by Harold D. Hunter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1970s, Pentecostal seminarians who were fed a steady diet of the monographs by James D.G. Dunn and F. Dale Bruner were often co-opted by magisterial traditions. It was time for a new generation of Pentecostal scholars where Pentecostals could themselves address issues brought to the forefront of their movement. This volume became one of the first books of its kind to crest the new wave of an emerging Pentecostal scholarship. Contemporary Pentecostal pneumatology was often regarded as a historically contributed and artificial novelty from the modern period and scores of Pentecostals were persuaded to forsake their heritage. Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative sought to ask the question if there was canonical evidence for a Charismatic dimension in the Christian pilgrimage. An answer in the affirmative inspired a scan of Christian figures through the centuries who have embraced this theological reality. The book ends with a theological synthesis that suggests an openness to various ways the Charismatic Spirit becomes a manifest reality in the lives of believers. Since the release of Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative in 1983, much significant work has been accomplished in this field by Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal scholars alike. Yet this original groundbreaking work remains relevant as researchers around the world face for the first time theological issues that go to the heart of Pentecostal identify.

Book The Sacraments and Consumer Culture

Download or read book The Sacraments and Consumer Culture written by Timothy Brunk and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Catholic Media Association Award first place award in sacraments What does consumerism have to do with the sacraments? We live in cultures where our senses of meaning, identity, and purpose are often found in what we purchase. Apart from the question of hedonism, there is the question of how we orient ourselves in an environment in which we end up marketing our very selves. In this book, Timothy Brunk examines how this consumer culture has had a corrosive effect on the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. He also assesses how sacramental worship can provide resources for responsible Christian discipleship in today’s consumer culture.
