This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For courses in first-year composition. This version of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum has been updated to reflect the 8th Edition of the MLA Handbook (April 2016)* The authority and currency of The Little, Brown Handbook in a briefer, more affordable, spiral-bound format LB Brief, Sixth Edition helps students to find what they need - and to use what they find. This reliable reference merges the authority of its parent, The Little, Brown Handbook, with a more streamlined presentation. LB Brief maximizes that handbook's strengths, while keeping pace with the rapid changes in writing and its teaching. It answers questions about the writing process, critical thinking, grammar and style, research writing, documentation, and more. With a cross-curricular outlook, easy-to-use format, and assumption of little or no experience with writing or handbooks, LB Brief is ideal for students of all interests and skill levels. * The 8th Edition introduces sweeping changes to the philosophy and details of MLA works cited entries. Responding to the "increasing mobility of texts," MLA now encourages writers to focus on the process of crafting the citation, beginning with the same questions for any source. These changes, then, align with current best practices in the teaching of writing which privilege inquiry and critical thinking over rote recall and rule-following.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-degree and undergraduate students are both inexperienced essay writers who need close guidance to become effective writers. One of the puzzles which they encounter at the college and university after reporting for studies is the course assignments offered to them by their lecturers, which demand them to be critical thinkers and argumentative essay writers. In most colleges and universities, lecturers provide to students broad questions to answer in the form of essays, either in group or individual assignments. How should they turn the broad assignment questions provided to them by their lecturers into specific researchable topics for essays? How should they handle literature in order to obtain valuable information to answer the provided question? How should they construct an informed and convincing argument using the collected information as evidence? This book concerns these and other related questions. With its clear illustrations, the book is designed to be a self-study guide and to offer solutions to many struggling students in colleges and universities. At the same time, the book can be helpful for lecturers to instruct their students how to write effective course assignments in their respective courses.

Download or read book Motives For Metaphor written by James E. Seitz and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite urgent calls for reform, composition, literature, and creative writing remain territorial, competitive fields. This book imagines ways in which the three English camps can reconnect. Seitz contends that the study of metaphor can advance curriculum reform precisely because of its unusual institutional position. By pronouncing equivalence in the very face of difference, metaphor performs an irrational discursive act that takes us to the nexus of textual, social, and ideological questions that have stirred such contentious debate in recent years over the function of English studies itself. As perhaps the most radical (yet also quotidian) means by which language negotiates difference, metaphor can help us to think about the politics of identification and the curricular movements such a politics has inspired.
