Book The Little Brown Church in the Vale When Did the Lights Go Out

Download or read book The Little Brown Church in the Vale When Did the Lights Go Out written by Bob G. Shupe and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have small churches remained small? And why has this mandate in Mark 16:15 not impacted the thousands of small, denominational churches across the country? When you consider the plan of salvation, how can a church not grow? Because of the positive growth in many nondenominational churches, some church leaders falsely assume they can have the same results by abandoning their denominational heritage. However, most people are attracted to a particular church because they feel welcomed by the people in that church, and because of that church's unique ministry in their community. While it may be helpful to de-emphasize the denominational connection, it is a mistake to abandon it. As you read The Little Brown Church in the Vale, you will be challenged to take a fresh look at the direction your ministry and your church is taking.

Book Small Congregation Big Potential

Download or read book Small Congregation Big Potential written by Lyle E Schaller and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kindle Edition There are many questions that leaders of small-membership congregations ask themselves about their church's future. Lyle Schaller suggests that two in particular should rise to the top of the list. First, what's the right size of for a church? Is the small congregation averaging two or three dozen people at worship a legitimate order of God's creation? You bet it is, says Schaller. Second, should these congregations make their plans on the basis of few resources and fewer options, or should they see themselves as possessed of pools of talent and expanding possibilities? If you are convinced that the former is true, then this book is not for you. If, however, you are among those who believe that small-membership churches are distinctive places of Christian witness and service, spreading the gospel and living in service to the world in ways that other, larger churches are not, then this book is for you. In it you will find the right questions to ask as you seek to lead a small-membership congregation, and solid, practical guidance for doing so.

Book excerpt: Discipleship was one of the central themes of Jesus' teaching, yet it is not a major emphasis today for many churches. This short study guide explores the Bible's teaching on discipleship, and covers such topics as the need for discipleship, the demands of discipleship, and the enemy of discipleship. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter, groups will work through guided discussions together as they learn about the centrality of discipleship in the Christian life. A series of ten 6–7 week studies covering the nine distinctives of a healthy church as originally laid out in Nine Marks of a Healthy Church by Mark Dever. This series explores the biblical foundations of key aspects of the church, helping Christians to live out those realities as members of a local body. Conveniently packaged and accessibly written, the format of this series is guided, inductive discussion of Scripture passages and is ideal for use in Sunday school, church-wide studies, or small group contexts.

Book From the Melting of the Snow to the Greening of the Fields

Download or read book From the Melting of the Snow to the Greening of the Fields written by Joan Little Angelo and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Melting of the Snow to the Greening of the Fields is my sixth book. It is the story of the St. Patrick’s Day Flood of 1936 as seen through the experiences of the fictitious Claymoore family and their friends and acquaintances. The fictional Reverend Claymoore is a coal miner and a Presbyterian preacher who lives in the coal patch of the Back Bench Mining Company disparagingly known as Bed Bug Row. The story takes place in just a few months during the year of 1936. It is about the flood, yes, and about love and courtship and about the people of southwest Pennsylvania who constantly find themselves, as the speech goes, opposing a sea of troubles in an effort to end them. The things they do to rise above their circumstances are simple, unselfconscious, and even at times heroic. However you see their actions, whether audacious and noble, sad or comical, you must know that they are always, to my knowledge, typical. The facts of the flood are true as reported in the 1936 issues of The Pittsburgh Press, which was my primary source of information. Also included in the accounts of the flood are personal recollections from the few people I could find who lived through it.

Book Eight Virtues of Rapidly Growing Churches

Download or read book Eight Virtues of Rapidly Growing Churches written by Matt Miofsky and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaders who are interested in planting or revitalizing congregations often feel discouraged and defeated after leadership conferences, or after reading about the ‘heroes’ of church planting and church growth. “They are amazing,” they say. “I can’t be that amazing.” But Jesus’ load is easy and his burden is light. When we examine the practices and characteristics of those ‘heroes’, we see striking trends and commonalities. Aspiring church leaders can learn the practices and develop the characteristics that will lead to successful churches. Instead of feeling defeated, new leaders should have a hope-filled sense of what new thing they can do. Authors Matt Miofsky and Jason Byasse carefully researched, interviewed, and profiled successful church-growers across the U.S., and identified 8 characteristics these leaders and their congregations have in common. These pastors are still learning, still figuring out how to do this work and how to faithfully live into God’s call. But for now, how are they doing what they do? What mistakes have they made & learned from? Where have they paid the stupid tax that others should avoid? Each of these ‘heroes’ is painfully ordinary and up front about their flaws. And each can see slightly farther than the rest of us. What do they see that we can learn from? Discover the 8 characteristics, and learn how to adapt them for your own congregation and calling: Believe in miracles and act accordingly Integrate new people quickly Love the local Exist to reach the next person Elevate the practice of giving Work in teams Preach effectively to skeptics Make friends with the denomination
