Chapter 3 introduces various algorithms, particularly the Elliptic Curve Method (ECM), the Quadratic Sieve (QS) and the Number Field Sieve (NFS) for integer factorization. This chapter also discusses some other computational problems that are related to factoring, such as the square root problem, the discrete logarithm problem and the quadratic residuosity problem.

Book Number Theory A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Number Theory A Very Short Introduction written by Robin Wilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Number theory is the branch of mathematics that is primarily concerned with the counting numbers. Of particular importance are the prime numbers, the 'building blocks' of our number system. The subject is an old one, dating back over two millennia to the ancient Greeks, and for many years has been studied for its intrinsic beauty and elegance, not least because several of its challenges are so easy to state that everyone can understand them, and yet no-one has ever been able to resolve them. But number theory has also recently become of great practical importance - in the area of cryptography, where the security of your credit card, and indeed of the nation's defence, depends on a result concerning prime numbers that dates back to the 18th century. Recent years have witnessed other spectacular developments, such as Andrew Wiles's proof of 'Fermat's last theorem' (unproved for over 250 years) and some exciting work on prime numbers. In this Very Short Introduction Robin Wilson introduces the main areas of classical number theory, both ancient and modern. Drawing on the work of many of the greatest mathematicians of the past, such as Euclid, Fermat, Euler, and Gauss, he situates some of the most interesting and creative problems in the area in their historical context. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Number Theory for Computing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking readers from elementary number theory, via algorithmic, to applied number theory in computer science, this text introduces basic concepts, results, and methods, before going on to discuss their applications in the design of hardware and software, cryptography, and security. Aimed at undergraduates in computing and information technology, and presupposing only high-school math, this book will also interest mathematics students concerned with applications. XXXXXXX Neuer Text This is an essential introduction to number theory for computer scientists. It treats three areas, elementary-, algorithmic-, and applied number theory in a unified and accessible manner. It introduces basic concepts and methods, and discusses their applications to the design of hardware, software, cryptography, and information security. Aimed at computer scientists, electrical engineers and students the presentation presupposes only an understanding of high-school math.

Book Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century

Download or read book Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century written by Władysław Narkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last one hundred years have seen many important achievements in the classical part of number theory. After the proof of the Prime Number Theorem in 1896, a quick development of analytical tools led to the invention of various new methods, like Brun's sieve method and the circle method of Hardy, Littlewood and Ramanujan; developments in topics such as prime and additive number theory, and the solution of Fermat’s problem. Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century: From PNT to FLT offers a short survey of 20th century developments in classical number theory, documenting between the proof of the Prime Number Theorem and the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. The focus lays upon the part of number theory that deals with properties of integers and rational numbers. Chapters are divided into five time periods, which are then further divided into subject areas. With the introduction of each new topic, developments are followed through to the present day. This book will appeal to graduate researchers and student in number theory, however the presentation of main results without technicalities will make this accessible to anyone with an interest in the area.

Book Pensees Catholiques Collections II

Download or read book Pensees Catholiques Collections II written by Edward L. Helmrich and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Trinity, only the second Person of the Trinity became man. But the second Person of the Trinity always acts in union with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was an only child, but he lived in the unit of the Holy Family. On the Cross, Jesus' death alone redeemed mankind, but he was crucified with two others. So, while Jesus is the sole mediator between God and man, we might look for two co-redeemers. And they would be Mary, who stood at the foot of the Cross, offering Jesus and herself to the God, and Joseph, who had died in their company. The existence of co-redeemers has implications for Our Lady of America: this apparition was recently judged as being without error, but not supernatural because Joseph was referred to as a "co-redeemer." From the above, and from the fact that this title is used by some of the Church Fathers for St. Joseph, maybe the status of this apparition can be reassessed. If it is declared supernatural, Mary's statue can be processed to and installed in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., as she requested. If that happens, Mary promised a spiritual renewal of our country.

Download or read book Charming Proofs written by Claudi Alsina and published by MAA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theorems and their proofs lie at the heart of mathematics. In speaking of the purely aesthetic qualities of theorems and proofs, G. H. Hardy wrote that in beautiful proofs 'there is a very high degree of unexpectedness, combined with inevitability and economy'. Charming Proofs presents a collection of remarkable proofs in elementary mathematics that are exceptionally elegant, full of ingenuity, and succinct. By means of a surprising argument or a powerful visual representation, the proofs in this collection will invite readers to enjoy the beauty of mathematics, and to develop the ability to create proofs themselves. The authors consider proofs from topics such as geometry, number theory, inequalities, plane tilings, origami and polyhedra. Secondary school and university teachers can use this book to introduce their students to mathematical elegance. More than 130 exercises for the reader (with solutions) are also included.

Book The Book of Prime Number Records

Download or read book The Book of Prime Number Records written by Paulo Ribenboim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text originated as a lecture delivered November 20, 1984, at Queen's University, in the undergraduate colloquium series established to honour Professors A. J. Coleman and H. W. Ellis and to acknowledge their long-lasting interest in the quality of teaching undergraduate students. In another colloquium lecture, my colleague Morris Orzech, who had consulted the latest edition of the Guinness Book oj Records, reminded me very gently that the most "innumerate" people of the world are of a certain tribe in Mato Grosso, Brazil. They do not even have a word to express the number "two" or the concept of plurality. "Yes Morris, I'm from Brazil, but my book will contain numbers different from 'one.' " He added that the most boring 800-page book is by two Japanese mathematicians (whom I'll not name), and consists of about 16 million digits of the number 11. "I assure you Morris, that in spite of the beauty of the apparent randomness of the decimal digits of 11, I'll be sure that my text will also include some words." Acknowledgment. The manuscript of this book was prepared on the word processor by Linda Nuttall. I wish to express my appreciation for the great care, speed, and competence of her work.
