It provides an ideal opportunity for examining a wide range of ancient sedimentary environments, including carbonate shelf, reefs and mud mounds, black shales and phosphates, and a spectrum of deep sea, shallow marine, fluvio-deltaic and alluvial siliciclastic sediments. The area boasts extensive outcrops and some of the most renowned sections through turbidites, large-scale soft sediment deformation features and sediments that display a response to tectonic and sea-level controls. Book excerpt: A half-graben known as the South Munster Basin developed in the southernmost part of Ireland during the Late Devonian. From the Late Devonian to Early Namurian, the basin was filled with abour 2.5 km of clastic-dominated shallow marine to deep water sediments. Distinct differences in sedimentation patterns and sediment thickness between the eastern and western parts of the South Munster Basin resulted in the recognition of two sub-basins, the Kinsale and Bantry Sub-basins within this basin. This thesis is concerned with the Carboniferous Middle Courceyan (Tournaisian) to Alportian (Namurian) succession in the South Munster Basin. The succession mainly comprises five Formations. These are the Courtmacsherry , Reenydonagan, Lispatrick, White Strand and Kilmore Formations. The Courtmacsherry Formation is dominated by calcareous mudstones with some sandstones. The reenydonagan Formation consists of sandstones, mudstones and carbonates. The Lispatrick Formation is characterised by black pyritic mudstones with dolomites and cherts. The White Strand Formation is a turbidite succession comprising interbeds of greywackes and mudrocks. The uppermost Kilmore Formation comprises fine-grained sandstones with mudrock interbeds. The stratigraphy of these Formations has been reviewed and revised in this study. A number of published and unpublished sequences have also been collated and correlated in order to simplify the nomenclature and to reduce the degree of straitgraphical confusion. It is confirmed that the age of the Lispatrick Formation ranges up to Arnsbergian age because goniatite-bivalve faunas of E2a marine band have been found in its upper part at Innishannon. Consequently, the East Point Formation of previous workers is considered to be the East Point Member of the upper Lispatrick Formation because the Member is lithologically similar to the Lispatrick Formation and also contains E2 goniatites and bivalves. The Middle Battery Formation of previous workers is accordingly assigned to the White Strand Formation here due to its bulk lithological similarity to the latter.

A fruitful co-operation between the International Geoscience Programme IGCP 596 and the International Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy (SDS) addressed the complex succession of climate-linked Devonian global events of varying magnitude. The primary goal of IGCP 596 was to assess mid-Palaeozoic climate changes and their impact on marine and terrestrial biodiversity using an interdisciplinary approach. The focus of SDS includes a revision of the eustatic sea-level curve and the integration of refined chrono- and biostratigraphy with modern chemo-, magneto-, cyclo-, event- and sequence stratigraphy. This enabled the much improved dating and correlation of abiotic perturbations, evolutionary changes, organism and ecosystem ranges. Results by 37 authors are presented in 14 chapters, which cover the entire Devonian.
