There is scarcely any race in Europe of which most people in England know less than they do of the Serbs, and there is no European country with which we have had less intercourse. Book The Political Novel in the South Slavic Intercultural Context

Download or read book The Political Novel in the South Slavic Intercultural Context written by Ethem Mandic and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Novel in the South Slavic Intercultural Context investigates the problem of the genre of the most elusive literary genre: the political novel, and the presence of “political” in novels of South Slavic literature, primarily in the intercultural South Slavic social context, as well as in the context of contemporary history of Southeast and Central Europe. This genre in the South Slavic inter-literary context has not yet been scientifically and systematically studied and presented, although there are critical and scientific reviews that indicate its presence in literary production. The best novels from the canonical South Slavic authors Miroslav Krleža, Mihailo Lalić, Oskar Davičo, Miodrag Bulatović, Ivo Andrić, Meša Selimović, Borislav Pekić, Mirko Kovač, Danilo Kiš, and others included in this book thematize the political concepts of the twentieth century, so in the broadest sense they can be considered within the genre of political novel, including its subgenre variants. The political novel in South Slavic literatures (in the intercultural context) in general is a specific genre of the novel in relation to the political novel written in the West, an inter-literary phenomenon that was a critique of the Titoist regime and a literary response to the poetics and politics of social realism. It is conditioned by specific historical-political and social movements during the twentieth century. The narrative of the political novel is a poetic resistance to ideological consciousness and a dogmatic view of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 67 texts, including hymns, manifestos, articles or extracts from lengthy studies exemplify the relation between Romanticism and the national movements in the cultural space ranging from Poland to the Ottoman Empire. Each text is accompanied by a presentation of the author, and by an analysis of the context in which the respective work was born. The end of the 18th century and first decades of the 19th were in many respects a watershed period in European history. The ideas of the Enlightenment and the dramatic convulsions of the French Revolution had shattered the old bonds and cast doubt upon the established moral and social norms of the old corporate society. In culture a new trend, Romanticism, was successfully asserting itself against Classicism and provided a new key for a growing number of activists to 're-imagine' their national community, reaching beyond the traditional frameworks of identification (such as the 'political nation', regional patriotism, or Christian universalism). The collection focuses on the interplay of Romantic cultural discourses and the shaping of national ideology throughout the 19th century, tracing the patterns of cultural transfer with Western Europe as well as the mimetic competition of national ideologies within the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Slav Culture The prevailing idea abroad concerning the Southern Slavs (Jugoslavs) is that they are a very young nation, who have never had any culture to speak of in the past, and may prove incapable of high intellectual achievement in the future. This impression is distinctly erroneous. Jugoslav civilization is as old as that of any of the great European nations, although, unfortunately, it has hitherto lacked continuity and unity. During the centuries of the past it has produced remarkable monuments of literature and art, and even now, in spite of the most adverse circumstances, the Jugoslavs are displaying a marvellous vitality and all qualities essential towards the achievement of the highest levels of culture. Even a short survey of the history of Jugoslav letters, science, and art will suffice to prove the truth of this assertion. First Beginnings. (800-1200 A. D.) Download or read book Venice and the Slavs written by Larry Wolff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the nature of Venetian rule over the Slavs of Dalmatia during the eighteenth century, focusing on the cultural elaboration of an ideology of empire that was based on a civilizing mission toward the Slavs. The book argues that the Enlightenment within the “Adriatic Empire” of Venice was deeply concerned with exploring the economic and social dimensions of backwardness in Dalmatia, in accordance with the evolving distinction between “Western Europe” and “Eastern Europe” across the continent. It further argues that the primitivism attributed to Dalmatians by the Venetian Enlightenment was fundamental to the European intellectual discovery of the Slavs. The book begins by discussing Venetian literary perspectives on Dalmatia, notably the drama of Carlo Goldoni and the memoirs of Carlo Gozzi. It then studies the work that brought the subject of Dalmatia to the attention of the European Enlightenment: the travel account of the Paduan philosopher Alberto Fortis, which was translated from Italian into English, French, and German. The next two chapters focus on the Dalmatian inland mountain people called the Morlacchi, famous as “savages” throughout Europe in the eighteenth century. The Morlacchi are considered first as a concern of Venetian administration and then in relation to the problem of the “noble savage,” anthropologically studied and poetically celebrated. The book then describes the meeting of these administrative and philosophical discourses concerning Dalmatia during the final decades of the Venetian Republic. It concludes by assessing the legacy of the Venetian Enlightenment for later perspectives on Dalmatia and the South Slavs from Napoleonic Illyria to twentieth-century Yugoslavia.

  • Pages : 218 pages

Book excerpt: Yugoslavia was a phenomenon of the 'short' twentieth century. Its two incarnations fell between the cataclysm of the First World War which destroyed the old order, and the transformation of Europe which followed the collapse of communism in 1989. The task of building a viable, unified state was complicated not only by Yugoslavia's diverse cultural composition, but also by the pressures which the evolution of international society have placed on the modern state. Yugoslavia - Explains and examines the key themes in the history of the former Yugoslavia - Synthesises the main strands in contemporary debate about the origins of the Yugoslav crisis - Presents a truly international history, exposing in full the role played by other countries in the rise and fall of the nation Focussing on both domestic and external factors, Ann Lane presents a balanced analysis of this ultimately failed attempt at state-building in a region of cultural diversity.
