Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 1 of 2 In working according to this method, my princi pal dangers are two. I am in danger of not fully apprehending the principles on which society in the United States is founded; and of erring in the application to these of the facts which came under my notlce. In the last respect, I am utterly hope less of my own accuracy. It is in the highest de gree improbable that my scanty gleanings in the wide field of American society should present a precisely fair sample of the whole. I can only explain that I have spared no pains to discover the truth, in both divisions of my task; and invite cor rection, in all errors of fact. This I earnestly do; holding myself, of course, an equal judge with others on matters of Opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Building Colonialism

Download or read book Building Colonialism written by Daniel T. Rhodes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Colonialism draws together the relationship between archaeology and history in East Africa using techniques of artefact, building, spatial and historical analyses to highlight the existence of, and accordingly the need to conserve, the urban centres of Africa's more recent past. The study does this by exploring the physical remains of European activity and the way that the construction of harbour towns directly reflects the colonial mission of European powers in the nineteenth century in Tanzania and Kenya. Based on fieldwork which recorded and analysed the buildings and monuments within these towns it compares the European creations to earlier Swahili urban design and explores the way European commercial trade systems came to dominate East Africa. Based on the kind of Urban Landscape Analyses carried out in the UK and Ireland, Building Colonialism looks at the social and spatial implications of the towns on the Indian Ocean coast which contain centres of derelict and unused buildings dating from East Africa's nineteenth-century colonial era. The book begins by concentrating upon towns in Tanzania and Kenya which were the key entry points into Africa for the nineteenth-century colonial regimes and compares these to later French and Italian colonies and discusses contemporary approaches to the conservation of colonial built heritage and the difficulties faced in ensuring valid participatory protection of the urban heritage resource.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shakespeare Society's Papers, Vol. 2 In issuing the second volume of The Shakespeare Society's Papers, the Council has much satisfaction in referring to the number and variety of the contributions, to the importance Of most of them (as illustrative Of the Works of our great dramatist and early stage-litera ture), and to the manner in which all tend to carry out the general objects of the Society. They show also the Wide interest taken in inquiries of the kind, extending even to some of our remoter colonies. Another gratifying point, more fully established by the present volume, is the active and persevering spirit of research generated by the continued labours of the Society. Individuals who have Old books or documents in their hands have thus been induced to explore their dusty depositories; and the result has been, among other things, the discovery of several highly curious and valuable tracts by dramatic contemporaries of Shake speare, which have hitherto remained in utter conceal ment. Two of these, a Pageant by Thomas Middleton, and a poem by Robert Greene (the only entire work in verse he perhaps ever wrote) are included in the eu suing pages, as too brief to form separate publications. They have never been heard of before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Clock Mirage written by Joseph Mazur and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tour of clocks throughout the centuries—from the sandglass to the telomere—to reveal the physical, biological, and social nature of time What is time? This question has fascinated philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists for thousands of years. Why does time seem to speed up with age? What is its connection with memory, anticipation, and sleep cycles? Award-winning author and mathematician Joseph Mazur provides an engaging exploration of how the understanding of time has evolved throughout human history and offers a compelling new vision, submitting that time lives within us. Our cells, he notes, have a temporal awareness, guided by environmental cues in sync with patterns of social interaction. Readers learn that, as a consequence of time’s personal nature, a forty-eight-hour journey on the Space Shuttle can feel shorter than a six-hour trip on the Soyuz capsule, that the Amondawa of the Amazon do not have ages, and that time speeds up with fever and slows down when we feel in danger. With a narrative punctuated by personal stories of time’s effects on truck drivers, Olympic racers, prisoners, and clockmakers, Mazur’s journey is filled with fascinating insights into how our technologies, our bodies, and our attitudes can change our perceptions. Ultimately, time reveals itself as something that rides on the rhythms of our minds. The Clock Mirage presents an innovative perspective that will force us to rethink our relationship with time, and how best to use it.
