Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Germany It is essentially subjective. German mediaeval poetry may not be as successful in making the golden Middle Age gorgeous upon earth again as other mediaeval literatures; but it gives us more penetrating glimpses into the inner life of the denizen of the Middle Ages, and thereby awakens a sympathetic interest in the modern reader. Its interpretation, again, of that great new-birth which we associate with the word Reformation appears in the still modern form Of a liberation of the individual from a world that took no stock of individuals. Lastly, the great German literature of the eighteenth century deals constantly with problems, ethic as well as aesthetic, which are as vital and. Real to us today as they were to that far-off time. We have to accept frankly the comparative absence of the formal beauty which the Latin peoples of Europe can point to in their literatures Germany has no Dante, Ariosto or Tasso; no Lope de Vega; no Corneille or Moliere but, on the other hand, her essential contribution to the wealth of the world's imagination has always centred in the interpretation Of heart and soul. Her literature, in spite of its broken endeavour, its fragmentary incomplete ness, possesses in this universal subjectivity a. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the his tory of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as may be necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. I have tried to make a good anthology for students who have learned to read the language of Goethe and Schiller with some facility, and would like to know something of the earlier periods, but have not studied, and may not care to study, Old and Middle German. On this account the selections in Part First are given in modern German translations. The original texts are omitted because space was very precious and the book was intended as an aid to literary rather than linguistic study. In making the selections my first principle was to give a good deal of the best rather than a little of everything. I wished to make friends for medieval German poetry, and it seemed to me that this could best be done by showing it in its strength and its beauty. So I have ignored much that might have had a historical or linguistic interest for the scholar, and have steadily applied the criterion of literary worth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of German Literature If we turn back two hundred years, we find the reading men of England, if they have time to go beyond their own authors, giving their attention, among moderns, to the Italians and Spanish. As yet in Europe only Italy and Spain, besides England, had seen the rise of literatures of sufficient moment to influence the cultivated world beyond the national limits. Dante, Petrarch, Boceaceio, Ariosto, Tasso, Machiavelli had lived, and these are still the greatest Italian names. In Spain, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Calderon had done their work, - work which no succeeding writers of that land have equalled. If we go back one hundred years, the literature of France has taken the place in the estimation of the English once held by the writers of Spain and Italy; the brilliant men of the age of Louis XIV have laid the world under their spell. In our time, again, the influence of France has been, to a large extent, supplanted. Following especially the lead of two of the most gifted Englishmen of the century, Coleridge and Carlyle, the present generation turns with most reverence to the Germans, often regarding their literature as the most important in the world, after our own, if, indeed, we are to make that exception. It will scarcely be questioned that some knowledge of the history of German literature is, to English-speaking persons, an essential part of thorough culture. Atheism was propagated only in the lower classes of society, particularly after. The French troops were quartered upon them, and had spread so much licentiousness.
