Book The Literary Year Book for the Year 1921 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literary Year Book for the Year 1921 Classic Reprint written by Mark Meredith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Year-Book for the Year 1921 Somewhat contrary to the usual procedure this Introduction to the 1921 Edition Of the literary year book has been written when all the work was completed. Handicapped somewhat by the lack of time for very careful corrections there are a number of clerical and printers' errors in the Book, which a careful reader will easily distinguish and read correctly. They are unfortunately inseparable from rush-work, and acknowledgments must be given to the printers and binders for their very helpful assistance. An endeavour has been made in the present volume to shed the halo of distinguished letters and to produce a book which will be really helpful in the common task Of the work-a-day world of the writer. One's first attempt at such a task can scarcely be successful, but if in a small measure the present edition is of some service to its users the Editor will feel repaid for the work involved. It has been a labour which has given him extreme pleasure, but it is his wish to be of still further service right throughout 1921 to the readers Of the Book, and any questions or letters addressed to him will always have careful attention. In the interests Of the authors themselves, particular attention is directed to the section on Literary Property (p. And the importance of Observing the suggestions laid down there cannot be over-emphasised. In the main the reader will find that there is more matter of use to him in this than in previous volumes, and with an earlier preparation Of the 1922 edition than was possible with this one, it is hoped that the scope of the Book will be considerably extended. Suggestions will receive careful consideration. It is gratifying to note in to-day's New Year's Honours the names of Mr. T. J. Bennett, m.p., for many years Editor Of the Times of India, Mr. William Davies, Editor of the Western Mail, Mr. Dawson Williams, M.D., Editor of the British Medical Journal, Mr. Samuel Squire Spriggs, M.D., Editor of the Lancet, and Mr. Wm. Denham, author and writer. One would like to see an increasing recognition by the State of men of letters and journalists, with a decreasing reward for mere political ends. The best achievements of humanity are fostered more by real literature and clean press work than by politics, and until the happy time of recognition arrives the lot of the writer and artist will remain difficult. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1921 and Year Book of American Poetry To get at the character of an American Poetry then, we must understand these forces which have been at work upon our national experiences. It is interesting in light of what I have said to quote this passage from a letter which I received from an interested reader of these anthologies. In the 1920 Anthology, it runs, you speak of we Americans as being without a 'tap root' in literature. I know we are young, yet it seems to me that if the real hundred per-cent American writers were encouraged the 'root' would respond by a greater depth of growth and in time we would have an American literature, and I am going to suggest that you in the 1921 Anthology select writers as nearly American as possible in name and in harmony with our country - make this issue American in every way descendents of the New England and New York and Pennsylvania and Virginia settlers. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Best Short Stories of 1921 and the Yearbook of the American Short Story by Sherwood Anderson INTRODUCTION I was talking the other day to Alfred Coppard, who has steered more successfully than most English story writers away from the Scylla and Charybdis of the modern artist. He told me that he had been reading several new novels and volumes of short stories by contemporary American writers with that awakened interest in the civilization we are framing which is so noticeable among English writers during the past three years. He asked me a remarkable question, and the answer which I gave him suggested certain contrasts which seemed to me of basic importance for us all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stespean, 1921 In our Sophomore year we were spurred to higher things by our past success. We became a class truly worthy' of notice. In the fall term we originated the English Drive for the purpose of improving the English of the College and it was such a brilliant success that each Sophomore Class since has put on a similar drive. We bought another Liberty Bond and presented it to the College. During the winter we studied Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and we gave the Court room scene in Literary Society. Considering the size of the undertaking and the work required it was a wonderful success. The actors were brilliantly costumed and the scene was brilliantly inter preted. In the same term we gave another literary programme in which the class song made its debut. This year was by no means all work, and no play. In the spring we felt pretty well satisfied and gave ourselves a little party inviting our four Basket Ball Stars, Ruby, Lenora, Blair and Burk as guests of honor. The things to be remembered from this occasion are the class yell we adopted then, and the ice cream that Flora and Violet scorched. We enjoyed this year so much we were sorry when commence ment came, but we determined to make our Junior year just as full and happy as this one had been. Book Notes and Reviews 1921 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes and Reviews 1921 Classic Reprint written by Henry James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Reviews, 1921 But even at the beginning his work was informed with distinction, distinction of thought and of expression. If one feels that he is occasionally ineffectual, because he was groping for a literary form which his youth had not yet achieved, one is never unaware of the charm with which his groping naturally invests itself. And so, if it served no other purpose, this collection of reviews by a youthful fellow-craftsman, now among the august dead, might, if studied seriously by re viewers of to-day in America, tend to revive a well-nigh extinct art; for these papers, whatever their faults, are the expression of an alert spirit, a discriminating intelligence, ardently devoting it self with rare singleness of purpose to a service the rewarding beauty of which it never doubts. Yet, after all, the chief function which this collec tion will perform, and one most welcomed by James's own faithful circle of readers, is that of self-portraiture. Book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 17

Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 17 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 17: Succeeding the Ophthalmic Year Book; September, 1921 Lead amblyopia. - Gibson, in dis cussing papilledema in ocular plumb ism states: that lead poisoning in children is apt to induce an over secretion Of cerebro-spinal fluid, as his cases prove; that this oversecretion is due to increased activity of the choroid gland seems likely. Whether lead in circulation causes this over secretion indirectly by means of a brain extract, or by direct stimulation, cannot be very easily decided. That lead does not excite the choroid gland to secrete, but induces the fundus changes thru the intervention of the kid neys, if accepted, could not explain the fact that the plumbic cases we see in children do not exhibit albuminuria or other evidences Of kidney disease, and that the fundus changes are those Of papilledema and not optic neuritis. Professor Mills, is right in stating that the fundus appearances of ocular plumb ism are identical with those Of cerebral tumor. He may be right in considering that lead acts indirectly on the choroid gland, as he thinks tumor growth does. In the case Of plumbism, however, we have lead circulation in the blood, as is proved by the fact that it is to be found in the urine and that it Often leads to a blue line of sulphid Of lead in the gums.
