Book The Literary Prot g es of the Lake Poets

Download or read book The Literary Prot g es of the Lake Poets written by Dennis Low and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dennis Low's re-evaluation of the Lake Poets as mentors begins with the controversial premise that Robert Southey was one of the nineteenth-century's greatest champions of women's writing. Together with Wordsworth and Coleridge, Low argues, Southey tried to end what he perceived to be the cultural decline of literature by nurturing the creative talents of many exceptional women writers. Drawing on 3,000 unpublished manuscripts in England, Scotland and the United States, Low examines the lives and works of four of the Lake Poets' literary protégées: Caroline Bowles, Maria Gowen Brooks, Sara Coleridge and Maria Jane Jewsbury. Though diverse in terms of their literary production, these women were united in their defiant efforts to write against an increasingly stagnant cultural milieu and their negotiation, wholeheartedly encouraged by their mentors, of contemporary publishing mores. This scrupulously researched book is a valuable contribution to the study of little-known women writers and to our understanding of the literary and publishing environment of Britain in the 1820s and 1830s.

Book On the Lake Poets

Download or read book On the Lake Poets written by Lord Francis Jeffrey Jeffrey and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850), founder and editor of the Edinburgh Review and the great reactionary critic of his age, said of the The Excursion 'This will never do'. Christabel he famously described as a 'miserable piece of coxcombry and shuffling' and The White Doe as 'the very worst poem we ever saw imprinted in a quarto volume.' This selection of Jeffrey's reviews is an important reminder of the power and cogency of the opposition that Wordsworth and his fellow Lakers had to overcome.

Download or read book Recollections of the Lakes and the Lake Poets written by Thomas De Quincey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Lakes and the Lake Poets: Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Southey Soon after my return to Oxford in 1807-8, I received a letter from Miss Wordsworth, asking for any subscriptions I might succeed in obtaining, amongst my college friends, in aid of the funds then raising on behalf of an orphan family, who had become such by an affecting tragedy that had occurred within a few weeks from my visit to Grasmere. Miss Wordsworth's simple but fervid memoir not being within my reach at this moment, I must trust to my own recollections and my own impressions to retrace the story which, after all, is not much of a story to excite or to im press, unless for those who can find a sufficient interest in the trials and calamities of hard-working peasants, and can reverence the fortitude which, being lodged in so frail a tenement as the person of a little girl, not much, if any thing, above nine years old, could face an occasion of sud den' mysterious abandonment, and could tower up, during 'one night, into the perfect energies of womanhood, under the mere pressure of difficulty, and under the sense of new born responsibilities awfully bequeathed to her, and in the most lonely, perhaps, of English habitations.
