Book Morphosyntactic Variation in Medieval Celtic Languages

Download or read book Morphosyntactic Variation in Medieval Celtic Languages written by Elliott Lash and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases the state of the art in the corpus-based linguistics of medieval Celtic languages. Its chapters detail theoretical advances in analysing variation/change in the Celtic languages and computational tools necessary to process/analyse the data. Many contributions situate the Celtic material in the broader field of corpus-based diachronic linguistics. The application of computational methods to Celtic languages is in its infancy and this book is a first in medieval Celtic Studies, which has mainly concentrated on philological endeavours such as editorial and literary work. The Celtic languages represent a new frontier in the development of NLP tools because they pose special challenges, like complicated inflectional morphology with non-straightforward mappings between lemmata and attested forms, irregular orthography, and consonant mutations. With so much data available in non-electronic form and ongoing efforts to convert these data to computer-readable format, there is much room for the developing/testing of new tools. This books provides an overview of this process at a crucial time in the development of the field and aims to the data accessible to computational linguists with an interest in diachronic change.

Book Imagined States

Download or read book Imagined States written by Luisa Del Giudice and published by . This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international ensemble of folklore scholars looks at varied ways in which national and ethnic groups have traditionally and creatively used imagined states of existence-some idealizations, some demonizations-in the construction of identities for themselves and for others. Drawing on oral traditions, especially as represented in traditional ballads, broadsides, and tale collections, the contributors consider fertile landscapes of the mind where utopias overflow with bliss and abundance, stereotyped national and ethnic caricatures define the lives of "others," nostalgia glorifies home and occupation, and idealized and mythological animals serve as cultural icons and guideposts to harmonious social life.

Book Anglo Irish Poems of the Middle Ages

Download or read book Anglo Irish Poems of the Middle Ages written by British Library and published by International Scholars Publications. This book was released on 1995 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English poems of the British Library Manuscript, Harley 913, were written in Ireland in the early-14th century. The manuscripts have strong Franciscan associations. Sometimes called The Kildare Poems, both because of their associations with that area and because one of them claims to have been written by Friar Michael of Kildare, the poems show considerable influences of the Irish culture in which they were called. They are also full of ideas, themes and images which are part of the Western European Christian tradition, and especially close in affinity to the acknowledged works of Franciscan friars. They are a witness to English literature in Ireland at this period.

Book The Spiritual Franciscans

Download or read book The Spiritual Franciscans written by David Burr and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2002 John Gilmary Shea Prize and the 2002 Howard R. Marraro Prize of the American Catholic Historical Association. When Saint Francis of Assisi died in 1226, he left behind an order already struggling to maintain its identity. As the Church called upon Franciscans to be bishops, professors, and inquisitors, their style of life began to change. Some in the order lamented this change and insisted on observing the strict poverty practiced by Francis himself. Others were more open to compromise. Over time, this division evolved into a genuine rift, as those who argued for strict poverty were marginalized within the order. In this book, David Burr offers the first comprehensive history of the so-called Spiritual Franciscans, a protest movement within the Franciscan order. Burr shows that the movement existed more or less as a loyal opposition in the late thirteenth century, but by 1318 Pope John XXII and leaders of the order had combined to force it beyond the boundaries of legitimacy. At that point the loyal opposition turned into a heretical movement and recalcitrant friars were sent to the stake. Although much has been written about individual Spiritual Franciscan leaders, there has been no general history of the movement since 1932. Few people are equipped to tackle the voluminous documentary record and digest the sheer mass of research generated by Franciscan scholars in the last century. Burr, one of the world's leading authorities on the Franciscans, has given us a book that will define the field for years to come.
