Book Factors Modifying Welfare in Captive Lioned tailed Macaques Macaca Silenus

Download or read book Factors Modifying Welfare in Captive Lioned tailed Macaques Macaca Silenus written by Lindsay Jane Skyner and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) is endangered due to habitat destruction with less than 3500 individuals remaining in isolated fragments of South-West India. Lion-tailed macaques do not reproduce readily in captivity and captive breeding may be relied upon for future conservation. Poor welfare can have negative effects on reproduction so it is important that lion-tailed macaque welfare is examined in captive groups. The aims of this thesis were to understand certain aspects of lion-tailed macaque welfare (behaviour and HPA physiology) in captive populations, with the view to making suggestions for management to promote the species' welfare and reproduction. Behaviour (188 hours), urine (n=133) and faecal samples (n=294) were collected from 38 lion-tailed macaques housed in four groups at the North of England Zoological Society (Chester Zoo), Bristol Zoological Gardens, Assiniboine Park Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park. The study successfully developed and validated assays to detect cortisol in lion-tailed macaque urine and faeces. The assays were then subsequently used to explore behaviour and HPA activity in these endangered primates. The institution in which the individuals were housed and basic life history parameters (age and sex) were explored to further understand the interplay between behaviour and physiology. Social relationships were assessed by measuring proximity (inter-individual distances and time spent in "arms-reach"). Finally the effect of visitors on behaviour, HPA activity and enclosure use was explored. There was significant variation between institutions in behaviour and HPA activity but not proximity. The age of lion-tailed macaques modified their behaviour, but not their HPA activity or proximity. The sex of lion-tailed macaques did not modify behaviour, HPA activity or proximity. The effect of visitors on lion-tailed macaques in the current study is not clear and confirms previous research on the visitor effect on captive primates. It can be concluded from this research that lion-tailed macaques are sensitive to the environment in which they are housed, indicating factors which may have negative effects on their captive breeding rates and ability to cope with habitat fragmentation for population's in-situ. The study has highlighted the need for each captive and wild group of lion-tailed macaques to be considered and monitored separately with regard to welfare and breeding.

Book Analysis of Lion tailed Macaque Habitat Fragmentation Using Satellite Imagery

Download or read book Analysis of Lion tailed Macaque Habitat Fragmentation Using Satellite Imagery written by Ramesh Saligrama Krishnamurthy and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation and forest fragmentation are the primary threats to the habitat of endangered lion-tailed macaques, Macaca silenus, in Karnataka, India. Landsat satellite images of northwest Karnataka, India, from 1977 and 1990 were analyzed. Two study sites, measuring 16.35 x 19.14 km (31,213 ha) and 14.34 x 21.44 km (30,561 ha), respectively, were selected for analysis. Based on a group home range estimate of 131 ha, contiguous habitat fragments large enough to support two or more groups of lion-tails remained available in the study area in 1990. A single contiguous patch of 14,718 ha in Site 1 and two contiguous patches in Site 2, 4,276 ha and 9,097 ha respectively, were available for reintroduction of captive lion-tailed macaque populations. Loss of habitat has primarily been occurring in and around previously disturbed regions. Although the study identified potential unfragmented sites, there is still a need for ground-truthing.

Book Behaviour and Space Use in Zoo Lion Tailed Macaques Macaca Silenus

Download or read book Behaviour and Space Use in Zoo Lion Tailed Macaques Macaca Silenus written by Avanti Mallapur and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been recognised that captive primate groups should be housed in environments in which their welfare is not compromised where they can exhibit most of their natural social and behavioural characteristics. In order to design and maintain ideal captive environments for primates, it is important to incorporate applied animal behaviour and welfare research in the mandate of conservation breeding programmes in zoos. In this study, the behaviour of captive lion-tailed macaques in 18 Indian zoos was recorded to identify the factors that influence the behavioural repertoire of captive lion-tailed macaques. Behavioural sampling was carried out only during the day when visitors were present at the macaque enclosures. The results showed that stereotypic pacing was the most commonly exhibited behavioural abnormality. Abnormal behaviours were only exhibited by confiscated and zoo-born individuals but never by wild-caught and captive-reared animals.
