Book The Lion of Flanders Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lion of Flanders Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Hendrik Conscience and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-17 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lion of Flanders, Vol. 1 Conscience could not go so far as this, of course, for a very good reason: Had he written in Dutch, he would simply have become a Dutch author, without the least in uence over the corrupted dialect he wished to raise to a place of honor. Therefore he wrote in Flemish, but with the awakening touch of a true genius. The lan guage grew under his master pen; he drew from it humor and pathos, descriptive range and ight of eloquence, yet he never forced it to service beyond its power. Instead, he discovered, by patient search and study, the needed word, the desired turn of phrase, the happy idiom, long forgotten, or long condemned to the most menial of prosaic uses. His style is clear and exible, intimate without being familiar, and of an admirable simplicity. His search for the buried treasures of word and phrase in the archives of old Flanders served a second purpose: it yielded him the material for his historical novels. It is beyond doubt that in this field Conscience took his cue from Scott, like the rest of the romancers of that day. It was a period of which historical fiction was. One of the logical products. The downfall of Napoleon had been followed by a revival of patriotism, still more by a desire to forget recent national humiliations in the glory of earlier national triumphs. Conscience drew with that gifted pen of his the glories of medieval Belgium; so that, while his Flemings were reveling in their ancestors' noble deeds as told by him, they discovered at the same time with wondering delight the dignity of their olden speech and its resources. Book Queering the Interior

Download or read book Queering the Interior written by Andrew Gorman-Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queering the Interior problematizes the familiar space of ‘home’. It deploys a queer lens to view domestic interiors and conventions and uncovers some of the complexities of homemaking for queer people. Each of the book’s six sections focuses on a different room or space inside the home. The journey starts with entryways, and continues through kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, bathrooms, and finally, closets and studies. In each case up to three specialists bring their disciplinary expertise and queer perspectives to bear. The result is a fascinating collection of essays by scholars from literary studies, geography, sociology, anthropology, history and art history. The contributors use historical and sociological case studies; spatial, art and literary analyses; interviews; and experimental visual approaches to deliver fresh, detailed and grounded perspectives on the home and its queer dimensions. A highly creative approach to the analysis of domestic spaces, Queering the Interior makes an important contribution to the fields of gender studies, social and cultural history, cultural studies, design, architecture, anthropology, sociology, and cultural geography.

Book Eleanor of Aquitaine as It Was Said

Download or read book Eleanor of Aquitaine as It Was Said written by Karen Sullivan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-08-16 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reparative reading of stories about medieval queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Much of what we know about Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and then Queen of England, we know from recorded rumor—gossip often qualified by the curious phrase “it was said,” or the love songs, ballads, and romances that gossip inspired. While we can mine these stories for evidence about the historical Eleanor, Karen Sullivan invites us to consider, instead, what even the most fantastical of these tales reveals about this queen and life as a twelfth-century noblewoman. She reads the Middle Ages, not to impose our current conceptual categories on its culture, but to expose the conceptual categories medieval women used to make sense of their lives. Along the way, Sullivan paints a fresh portrait of this singular medieval queen and the women who shared her world.
