Book The Link Vol 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Link Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 6 Peter Wallace (Premonition, page 3) is now a "regular" contributor to these pages. Pearl P. Puckett (Hell Buggies, page 11), the red-head from Omaha, is back again and this time with an article which should appeal to both the old and new "tank gang" as well as the rest of you readers who have wondered about those huge pieces of armored equipment which were once the particular charge of General Patton. Gertrude Doro (The Least of These, page 8) is a Florida lady who just loves to write. Her pride and joy is an 18-year-old son who is a freshman at the University of Florida. Bill seems inclined to follow in his mother's footsteps as witnessed by his poem, Thanks, which appeared in the May Link. Joseph C. Salak (Combat Cartoonist, page 14), who will be remembered for his series on the hobby of stamp collecting, brings to us the story of another hobby which has become a full-time paying job. Henry P. Chapman (Life Is What You Make It, page 19) stopped drawing long enough to write this worth-while article for Link readers. Mr. Chapman has recently been appointed New York Editor of The American Cartoonist. In producing the illustration for Lulu Bradley Cram's The Plains of Caen (page 24) he employed an unusual process, the technique of which was taught to him by a Chinaman. The process is used when a wood-engraving effect is desired without going through the tedious process of carving out a wooden "plate." C. Skrep (No End to It? page 27) does not believe in the principal of Bolshevism and therefore came to the United States 24 years ago to make it his new country. In Russia Mr. Skrep experienced all the terror of revolution and the bloodiest of civil wars. Many times it seemed a miracle that his life was spared. Of himself he says, "This matter of circumstance turned me, a professional man (in the past I was a successful mining engineer) who was mostly busy making a fortune, into a deeply religious man. It seems that only the greatly superior power of God granted me the greatest gift for every man - life." J. P. Armstrong (Like Father, page 29) was born and reared in western New York State. He taught at several village schools in New York for a number of years and then served for four years as superintendent of the consolidated schools at Hotchkiss, Colorado. After losing his health, he moved to California where he now pursues the business of writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Link Vol 6 written by Delmar L. Dyreson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 6: March, 1948 John Scott Douglas (So Long Remembered, page 3) is a new contributor to The Link but by no means new to the writing world. His travel in 17 foreign countries has provided him with many interesting characters and backgrounds for his stories and has led him to such unforgettable experiences as exploring a pre-Incan city in the Peruvian Andes with the help of hired Quechua Indians. Another adventure took him to the bottom of the ocean off the mid-California coast. He says if any work were ever to tempt him away from writing it certainly would be deep-sea diving. Joe E. Brown (Really - I Am a Serious Guy, page 7) needs no introduction. This article gives the reader a glimpse of the great humanitarian heart which led this man to the battlefields in an effort to bring a bright spot to the dreary days of combat. Mr. Brown lost his own son in the war effort, but even this great sorrow did not prevent his untiring service to the men in the armed forces. Chaplain Claude E. Strait (After Two Years in Japan, page 11) brings to us a report compiled from data collected for almost two years. His article attempts to portray the significance the occupation has had upon Japan two years after the surrender. We are happy to present this material to Link readers in the belief that a better understanding of the situation in Japan will be gained. Harold Heifer (The Sight of Beauty, page 15) will be remembered as the writer of The Face of Guilt which appeared in our January issue. Arthur Holsinger (Walk in the Valley, page 18) whose story, Requiem for the Living, in the November issue won many fine comments both for him and The Link now brings to us another piece of excellent writing. Ruel McDaniel (Service for Manuel, page 26) is the president of a publishing company in Port Lavace, Texas, which puts out "a little two-by-four newspaper and is planning a trade journal." He has traveled every State except North Dakota gathering article and story material. He has also managed to get into Canada, Cuba and Mexico. Not only has he written several books, two of which have been published, but to date he has sold 5687 stories and articles Mr. McDaniel states that he was a Naval aviator in World War I (ensign) and that makes him a pretty old codger - 50 to be exact - and it isn't often that he feels a day over 60. He says he is kept going by the glowing fact that in another 15 years he will be eligible for Social Security. He possesses one wife, one cat, one Graflex and one Buick. The cat and Mr. McDaniel get along very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The four years in the Army, two of them in the tropics, had taken something out of me. I knew I was a second-rater and would never hit the big time again and I knew I shouldn't be fighting. But what else could I do? A man and his family had to eat and fighting was all I knew. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Link Vol 9 Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Link, Vol. 9 The boys in Tank Town Tavern were giving old Lonz a bad time again. When, as always, he couldn't think of an answer, he'd turn his scrawny little neck slightly to the left, wrap his feet tight around the bar stool and spit vehemently and accurately into the old brass spittoon alongside the black potbellied stove. Most times he didn't mind. He'd park his little red, white, and blue wagon, that flew the American flag as proudly as any battlewagon, outside the tavern and come in and drink beer and josh with the boys. "What makes you such an all-fired American?" they would ask him. "What's your country ever done for you? Look at you now, an old man, hauling junk in a little old kid's wagon and getting most of your grub out of the market dump, stuff that people who aren't half so crazy about this country wouldn't even touch. What's so hot about that?" He didn't have any answer for them except that he was proud to be able to make his own way and pay for his own beer. How could he tell them that it seemed good just to stand and breathe the free air that came whipping in off the bay? It just seemed sweeter somehow than the air had ever been in the Old Country where he was raised. He didn't know why. He just knew it was so. Ah, the fellows that hung around here, he didn't mind what they said. They didn't mean it, and he knew they'd be the first to argue the other way if they thought that would rile him. It was just all part of the tavern fun. They wouldn't even bother kidding him if they didn't like him. Old Lonz knew that. But tonight he was mad. His deep blue eyes turned midnight blue, and his prickly two-day growth of white beard was bristling out of the red in his face. There was a newcomer in the crowd. He looked like a seaman, big and rough but with nervous hands and a cocky way that would have been taken out of him a long time ago if he hadn't been so big. Old Lonz was mad because the stranger's laughter was tinged with a sneer and he had remarked, "You're an old fool!" in such a way that even the other boys had not liked it and had become silent. He gripped his glass so hard that Blackie the bartender leaned toward him and said gently, "Take it easy, Lonz." "I'd like to spit in his eye!" Lonz muttered. "I'd like to spit right in his eye!" He planked his glass down on the counter, sloshing the bit that was left, wiped his hands on his stiff coat and climbed off the stool.
