Book Corporate Strategies in Recession and Recovery Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Corporate Strategies in Recession and Recovery Routledge Revivals written by Richard Whittington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book is based on detailed comparative case studies of eight firms’ responses to the recession of the early 1980s, the worst crisis for British manufacturing in the post-war period. Following these companies’ progress from 1979 to 1985, Whittington examines the various recession strategies they adopted and the consequences of these for management change and financial performance in the recovery. Drawing on the Realist social theory of Roy Bhaskar, Whittington argues that the class, gender, generation and ethnicity of the decision-makers involved in the eight case studies collectively made an impact on their strategic choices. This is a timely and practical reissue, which will be of value to students, managers and academics concerned with strategic management, developments in organizational theory, and the current economic climate.

Book Managing the Business Case for Sustainability

Download or read book Managing the Business Case for Sustainability written by Stefan Schaltegger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difficulties in moving towards corporate sustainability raise the question of how environmental and social management can be integrated better with economic business goals. Over the last decade, the relationship between environmental and economic performance, and more recently the interaction between sustainability performance and business competitiveness, have received considerable attention in both theory and practice. However, to date, only partial aspects of the relationship between sustainability performance, competitiveness and economic performance have been studied from a theoretical as well as an empirical perspective. And, to date, no unique relationship has prevailed in empirical studies. A number of explanations have been put forward to explain this, including methodological reasons, such as the lack of statistical data, the low quality of that data, or the fact that such data is often available for short time periods only. Other theoretical explanations have been developed, such as the influence of different corporate strategies or the relatively small influence of environmental or sustainability issues as one factor among many on the economic or financial success of firms. So, how should the business case for sustainability be managed? This is the starting point for this book, which compiles insights on a large number of aspects of the link between sustainability performance, business competitiveness and economic success in an attempt to provide a comprehensive and structured view of this relationship. The book provides an unrivalled body of knowledge on the state of theory and practice in this field and identifies prospective future fields of work. The book includes: conceptual frameworks for the interaction of social, environmental and economic issues in business environments; case studies of companies that have successfully integrated social, environmental and economic issues; analyses of the causal and empirical relationship between environmental and/or social performance, business performance and firm-level competitiveness; concepts and tools useful for improving business value with proactive operational strategies; assessment of the factors influencing operational sustainability strategies and their economic impact; and comparisons of interactions between sustainability performance and firm competitiveness across industry sectors and countries. Managing the Business Case for Sustainability is the definitive work in its field: the most comprehensive book yet published on the theory and practice of managing sustainability performance, competitiveness, environmental, social and economic performance in an integrated way. It will be essential reading for managers, academics, consultants, fund managers, governments and government agencies, NGOs and international bodies who need a broad and comprehensive overview of the business case for sustainability.

Book Corporate Responsibility

Download or read book Corporate Responsibility written by Ronny Manos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to engage in corporate social action (CSA), and the debates regarding its costs, benefits and implications to corporate performance represent a demanding issue for scholars and managers. Research is inconclusive regarding the causal relations between CSA, corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP), despite numerous empirical and theoretical studies devoted to the issue. This book presents an in-depth study of corporate social action and the factors influencing a decision to engage in it. Going beyond the causal relationship between CSA and firm performance, the book stresses the link between CSA and a firm's core managerial policies and practices, reflecting the complexity and varied facets of CSA and the numerous internal and external factors that influence its outcomes. The book draws on the experiences of various industrial sectors to reveal the importance of a range of issues such as top management pay dispersion and ownership structure, which may influence the firm's decision to engage in CSA. It also explores some of the external influences on firms, such as institutional norms, the geopolitical environment and the industrial sector. The first part of the book provides an overview of the thematic issues of CSA and performance. The second part presents a series of empirical studies that examine factors and determinants of CSA. The third part presents case studies to illustrate the processes and outcomes of CSA policy and strategy in environmentally hazardous industries.

Book Redesigning Organizational Sustainability Through Integrated Reporting

Download or read book Redesigning Organizational Sustainability Through Integrated Reporting written by Fabrizio Granà and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of accounting and reporting practices in representing sustainability within organizations and examines how individuals engage with integrated reporting to make sustainability meaningful. It provides theoretical and empirical contributions to address the role of accounting and reporting practices, by exploring the case of a large international oil and gas company, which operates in more than 70 countries worldwide. The author argues that there are three key features that may affect an organization's approach towards sustainable value creation: firstly, how the adoption of integrated accounting and reporting practices affect the way in which organizations perceive, evaluate and combine financial and non-financial performance; secondly, what the effects of adopting integrated accounting and reporting practices are on managers' aspirations towards sustainable value creation; and thirdly, how integrated accounting and reporting practices stimulate questioning and debate around how non-financial initiatives and performance affect short, medium and long-term financial outcomes. The book shows how undefined concepts such as sustainability and sustainable development are constructed and gain meaning throughout the continuous debates that take place during the production of accounting and reporting practices and furthermore, how organizations can use integrated reporting to embed sustainability and financial performance within their decision-making processes. The book will be of interest to scholars in the field of accounting, management and sustainability, as well as practitioners from a wide array of additional fields, such as governance, business ethics and corporate reporting

Book Pure Profit

Download or read book Pure Profit written by Robert C. Repetto and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study demonstrates a methodology that translates the implications of a company's environmental performance into financial terms. The methodology is forward-looking, deals explicitly with uncertainties regarding future environmental developments, and is consistent with established financial valuation techniques. The approach should also be easily adapted for use by company managers as an internal strategic planning tool. An application of this methodology to 13 leading companies in the US pulp and paper sector shows that pending environmental issues will have material financial impacts on companies in the pulp and paper sector and that these financial exposures vary considerably between companies. Knowing which companies are best positioned with regard to environmental issues could improve investors' decision-making.
