Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Book The Works of Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 Besides the biography proper, comprised in twenty-six short chapters, this volume contains a liberal collection of the most treasured stories and anecdotes either told by Lincoln or concerning him. Every effort has been made to include only such "Lincoln stories" as have well-established authenticity. Here also are estimates of Lincoln's character and achievements as presented in the eloquent tribute of Robert G.Ingersoll and the memorable eulogy pronounced by Henry Watterson. The life of Lincoln cannot be fully understood without a study of his letters and speeches, including the great debates with Stephen A. Douglas. As a stump speaker and an orator of singular effectiveness Lincoln left the impress ohis genius on the body politic no less plainly marked than the influence of his character and deeds. Owing to the comparative brevity of the present Life, it has been deemed best to give here but few quotations from speeches and letters, but in the other volumes of this series all the speeches are included, together with as many of the letters as are considered interesting or important. Read in connection with the Life, these will leave little wanting that is needful to a full appreciation of the personality and public services of the "first American." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln: The Man and the Statesman Acquaintance with the lives of great men and women is one of the best means of setting right ideals and developing good character. Lincoln's young soul was infused with the life of Washing ton. This sympathetic sketch cannot fail to lead to admiration of Lincoln as a man, and admira tion usually leads to imitation. On the other hand, the young student can, in this brief story, get a clear idea of the real issues be tween the North and the South, through the study of the kansas-nebraska Act, the Dred Scott case, the lincoln-douglas debates, the question of State Rights, and the Thirteenth Amendment. Book The Lincoln Legion

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Legion: The Story of Its Founder and Forerunners The reader of this volume needs to bear in mind the necessarily restricted scope of the book. The volume is intended to awaken interest in a new pledge-signing movement, and is, therefore, confined in its discussions to individuals, societies, and movements which have been peculiarly identified with urging total abstinence and fostering it through the pledge method. This accounts for many silences, such as that concerning the Hon. Neal Dow, the Nestor of Prohibitionists, and the long and noble list of eloquent and self-sacrificing orators and workers of the National Prohibition Party, and in other lines of temperance effort. Book Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by John T. Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 of 2 His ancestors, who were Quakers, went to Virginia from Berks County, Pennsylvania. An effort to identify them with the New England family of the same name ended in nothing more definite than a similarity of Christian names in both families, such as Enoch, Levi, Mordecai, Solomon, Abra ham, and the like. This effort to connect the president with the Lincolns of Massachusetts was afterward carried forward by others, who felt an interest greater than his own in establishing the fact. Yet if he had expected the quest to result satisfactorily, he would probably have been less indifferent about it; for it is obvious that, in common with all Ameri cans of the old native stock, he had a strenuous desire to come of respectable people; and his very reluctance to have his apparently low extrac tion investigated is evidence that he would have been glad to learn that he belonged to an ancient and historical family of the old Puritan Common wealth, Settlers not far from Plymouth Rock, and immigrants not long after the arrival of the May flower. This descent has at last been traced by the patient genealogist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
