The road We do not think, in View of the indisputable facts relative to the existence of the road, of Reeder's Ferry and of the long-continued use of Apraw Ford for possibly a century before 1830, that we need! To spend any time in argument on this branch of the subject, only to say to the commission that we are ready and able to point out the exact course of the road for almost every foot of the way. A few changes have been made in the Portersville road since Abraham Lin coln drove his yoke of oxen over it in March, 1830, but we can show where these changes have been made With the exception of only a few short distances, where the soil gives no evidence at this time of its use as a road. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across the Continent by the Lincoln Highway From the Pacific to the Atlantic by the Lincobi Highway, with CaHfornia and the Virginias and Maryland thrown in for good measure! What a tour it has been! As we think back over its miles we recall the noble pines and the towering Sequoias of the high Sierras of California; the flashing water-falls of the Yosemite, so green as to be called Vernal, so white as to be called Bridal Veil; the orchards of the prune, the cherry, the walnut, the olive, the almond, the fig, the orange, and the lemon, tilled like a garden, watered by the hoarded and guarded streams from the everlasting hills; and the rich valleys of grain, running up to the hillsides and dotted by live oak trees. We recall miles of vineyard under perfect cultivation. We see again the blue of the Pacific and the green of the forest cedars and cypresses. Book Lincoln Highway Across Indiana

Download or read book Lincoln Highway Across Indiana written by Jan Shupert-Arick and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lincoln Highway across Indiana explores Indiana's unique role in Lincoln Highway history and celebrates Indiana's place in early automotive and road-building history. Once known as the "Main Street of America," the Lincoln Highway route was established across northern Indiana in 1913, linking larger cities--Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Goshen, South Bend, LaPorte, and Valparaiso--to smaller communities. Most Lincoln Highway towns renamed their main streets Lincolnway in recognition of the nation's first coast-to-coast auto road. When the Lincoln Highway Association shortened the route in 1926, the route linked Fort Wayne to Columbia City, Warsaw, and Plymouth, giving the state two Lincoln Highway routes. From Fort Wayne to the famous Ideal Section, between Dyer and Schererville, Indiana's Lincolnway towns remain proudly connected to Lincoln Highway history. Through vintage photographs, postcards, advertisements, and other historical records, this armchair tour of the highway visits sites favored by early tourists, documents the people and places that made the highway a vital corridor, and celebrates Hoosier Carl Fisher's leadership in the formation of the Lincoln Highway Association, as well as the people who work to preserve its legacy today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Highway: The Story of a Crusade That Made Transportation History When man made use of natural or unimproved means of transportation only, his progress socially and culturally was slow; when he developed mechanical means of moving from place to place, it was accelerated. The modern highway and its complement, the auto mobile, together represent the broadest means oi land transportation yet attained. It is impossible to separate these two factors; the automobile is worthless without the improved road and the road is of limited value without the automobile. Together, they have lengthened the span of average life appreciably. They have reduced the amount of time we must spend in travel. They have emancipated man from provincialism. They have given him quick and easy means of direct contact with distant communities. They have opened up to him, for business or enjoy ment, thousands of square miles of country, educated him to the healthfulness of outdoor travel and recrea tion, enabled him to live amid more healthful sur roundings at no sacrifice of convenience.
